I don't think Russian pilots know English

Was inbound to EBBR, short final RWY 20 (blue arrow) when the appraoch controller shouted "Go around!". I hit the TOGA and when i was climbing out and banking to get into the pattern again i saw a small jet lined up on the runway where i was supposed to come in at. Back into approach controller told me they told a small Russian private jet to hold short of the runway and he just taxied into it and lined up (green line). I didn't even see him as i was looking at the dots. I don't understand that none of the two cockpit crew members do not listen or understand what ground is telling them to do.

Whole side of airports and traffic control that I've never even heard of before :)

I remember there was a post here a few years ago about someone watching a 747 attempt to land on top of another, and pull up like crazy.

The flight history got dug up, and you could watch two planes converge onto the same place, same time with just 100' altitude difference. Crazy.

tranza 02-14-2009 08:08 AM

That's too confusing to me...

"I didn't even see him as i was looking at the dots." that comment makes me question if you are really a pilot as you claim to be. Maybe you just play FlightSim alot

The solution is to make the international language of the air Russian, after all we all know that Americans and Brits are so good at foreign languages this would solve the problem at a stroke.

All control towers speak english. It's just an accepted fact of being a pilot. :2 cents:

Yes, I know. That's why it was so funny to suggest all pilots learn Russian.

If not doing full ILS approach "looking at the dots" is a normal procedure. I'm sure this procedure has several names but outhere we just call it "looking at the dots or monitoring the dots" wich just is monitoring the instruments, overhere we call it the dots because the glideslope on the instrument pannel is an arrow and dots, trick is to keep the arrow in the middle. While doing that the pilot not flying monitors the airspeed and other instruments and gives the calls as needed to the pilot flying. When during that an aircraft taxi into the RWY, wich doesn't take long it can be nobody sees it, it happened before... Both pilots are looking at instruments untill a certain point where they look out the windshield.

It's an international rule that pilots must know english, atleast to the point they can understand and answer control.

Nice! You going for commercial or private license? Why Israel? I hear it's hard overthere.

greg80 02-15-2009 12:32 PM

well hold short is something that he should understood as a pilot even if he doesn't speak english

I am starting my pilot training TOMORROW! Did some flights with my friend in the last few days, also started with theory already.

I will be flying Piper Tomahawk. What do you fly?

I thought this was very common where insted of holding short they move into the take off spot ?. About a month ago the southwest i was in did a go around and the captain came on the radio and told that their was another aircraft on the runway and its very common ?

I can asure you that it isn't common for any aircraft to be on the same runway another aircraft is inbound for in short final. What does happen alot, on busy airports, is that they try to pump the queue with very short interval time between approaching and departing aircraft and if any aircraft that is lined up doesn't take off right away, because pilots didn't finish the checklist yet or for whatever reason is that they let the incomming aircraft go around. But when told to hold short, it's pretty simple, you hold short. Going for line-up when not told to isn't normal at all :upsidedow
