Just curious from a technical perspective with what I'llTestYourGirls posted:

1. There must be some money to be made from SMS, and not just by the carrier and aggregator who get most of the chunk from the premium SMS charges (unless something's changed in the past couple of years). Otherwise, the late-night commercials for horoscopes, love advice, yadda yadda wouldn't be on.

2. The price point per premium message is usually around $.99. I have no idea what the program gets of that cut after carrier and aggregator, but the affiliate would get even less.

3. Or, is it a pay-per-phone-number program?

Am I missing something? Because it'd be sweet to hear about how a company monetizes on SMS as they must exist.

WiredGuy 02-12-2009 02:42 PM

Have you cleared this landing page with your SMS aggregator as it seems to not be compliant with quite a few mobile marketing rules. Especially because you don't have the short code public for texting STOP to. The terms are hidden in the background image and the terms are below the fold of the page.

1. There is definately money to be made. Not only from your observation of late-night commercials but also knowing that there are over 255 million mobile users in the US who sent over 48 BILLION text messages last quarter

2. The wireless carrier takes about 50% of the retail price and affiliates can make up to 20-25% depending on volume

3. Most programs will want to do a straight rev share. Also remember there are no charge backs and anyone with the most basic crap mobile phone can participate.

This along with most mobile services are still in a growth stage... there is still money to be made here.

Hit me up if anyone wants more info... I have been doing this for years

Sounds like you know the business and thanks for your comments.

I am not sure about the not listing the sort code since there is no way to join this service without getting a message first which would show the short code.

Terms are hidden in the background? I don't agree with that.

The terms are below the fold of the page depending on the size of your monitor and there is no way to start the service with out scrolling to the bottom to click the button so I don't see a problem here.

One thing that may be a problem is Aaliyah Love's ass... damn that is hot

Thanks

The short code is supposed to be on the service landing page as well as when receiving texts from the service. The background image where Aaliyah and the blonde with the tattoo are reading the text is overlapping with the T&C making it not legible. I believe the last time I did a mobile campaign, the aggregators required the terms & service above the fold on an 800x600 page which is what I'm trying it on. The link to Terms and Service is also hidden, the text is clickable to a link but not clearly a link. The candychat.com page is fine, its the link Roger posted which doesn't seem compliant.

Hey, i'm just looking out for you Roger ;)
Better me than a fine from the aggregators. I've had to go thru tons of hoops from those people that I've scrapped tons of pages because of them, lol.

I can't replicate the overlapping issue on IE but I'll look into it as well as the other issues you mention

Thanks again :thumbsup

I was thinking a lot of the same things. It's sad after promoting that stuff hard that I even notice little things like that when looking at other sites.

You have to these days or you forfeit your entire earnings. With mainstreamers doing net 30 - net 60, a loss like that can be catastrophic.

WiredGuy, I am working with Roger on this and its a different payout model. You should just try it and you'll see how it works.

Ian's Jen at MistyMobile.com is doing it with great success.

Contact me directly and we can discuss.

CIVMatt, you can design your own page but it has to be cleared. As you can see from other posts there are super tight rules when dealing with wireless carriers.

Contact me directly if you want/need more info.

These rules are less than clear and easy. Several carriers have their own rules but in general you can check out the MMA (Mobile Marketing Association) Policies and Guidelines

I typically use FunMobile's marketing policies as a guideline as they're the most strict. I'll get you a link on Monday, I think its about 10 pages or so.

This gave me an idea. Text chat with dead girls.

Sort of a John Edward psychic talking with the dead thing.. 'I can feel a presence.. it's a woman.. it's.. your dead wife.. she's here with me.. she says she loves and misses you'... etc..

He's getting $80 a head for a live show..

Great entertainment value :)

TheDoc 02-16-2009 03:56 PM

WG or someone, maybe you guys can clear this up..

Are you guys connected to a backend (the providers) so you can bill them through the phone bill, ie the phone company or whatever pays you and charges them?

I ask because of the rules.. Someone else is controlling your marketing, I assume because you are using something they own.

Belinda 02-16-2009 03:58 PM

Sent an email. Would love more info.

You are correct. We have a billing relationship with wireless carriers so users who participate get billed directly on their phone bill. Thus the "rules". We can do our own marketing but must stay within the guidelines.

The good thing is the carrier collects for us (or they deduct from pre-paid) so no bad debt. The bad part is we have to play by their marketing rules. We go as aggressive as we can and sometimes get hands slapped but that?s just the game :)

Fuzebox, good advice, you are right. Are you with another affiliate program for Text Chat? Would love to compare if you are.

As for my "try it and see" comment, since this isn't the usual web stuff the best way to understand this is to try it from your own phone to see how it works. I can see this as a good fit for decline traffic also.

Thanks
