what certificates/seals give mainstream sites the most credibility?

we are considering getting a EV SSL certificate (green address bar) and are trying to determine the best certificates (not encryption-wise, but would make visitors more comfortable with a site) to help increase conversions for mainstream users. got the company logos, as many of the seals you could not right-click onto get the image url

Rather than give my biased thoughts out, thought i would ask first the community

DutchTeenCash 02-04-2009 12:05 PM

im checking for verisign normally thawte as well

gotta say we had our fair share of fake inet seals here in Holland or expired ones that never get renewed

selena 02-04-2009 12:07 PM

VeriSign gives me the warm fuzzies as a consumer, but as an entity, their certificates were way too expensive for me.

good question. we need to get another cert anyway, but the question was really aimed at "what cert will best leave the impression that we are a serious business"

im not sure if the "average" user really understands the difference between the bbb seal, or that truste is for privacy, etc. its them looking at a site and in a few millionths of a second, determining in their head that its run by a company thats to be trusted

but that is how i think, im here to get others opinions on this :)

as far as pricing, most of them are generally under 1k/yr.

DutchTeenCash 02-04-2009 12:28 PM

hmm k

you offer services to endclients aka surfers? I thought wmc is a printing and payment company for the industry

or are you talking industry members who look at the site and think wmc is a serious biz cause they have a seal? Gotta say I really never look at industry sites and OK to cooperate just cause they have a seal. Feedback and experience and how fast they reply etc is what matters

Making that sale or order is based upon many factors I doubt trust due to a seal is gonna increase chances

Then again for 500a year you cant miss

Ill sell you a OK BY BOB for $100 :)

DutchTeenCash 02-04-2009 12:29 PM

Ok heres a great idea and ill give it to you for free:

start an adult seal - just for the industry

robfantasy 02-04-2009 12:31 PM

mccafee secure

first, thanks for your input here

its not as much for adult as it is mainstream affiliate networks, but i guess an analogy would be, what type of billing company would you trust when you look at their site (reputation aside) what type of site would make you comfortable to trust them with your $$, that sort of question

I do check the site and google them if Im hesitating before I put down any of the cc details etc

Not to rant but there are some 3rd party cc companies who have forms that look cookie cutter, ppl still use them

tranza 02-04-2009 12:39 PM

I'd go with VeriSign.....

That thing is so much bullshit. It's basically the same as using "PROTECTED BY JPEG". Because that's all it does.

webmasterchecks 02-05-2009 09:06 AM

so check this out, we decided on the thawte certificate when i looked at the page again and saw it at 599. which was strange because i remembered it as more. i looked from a different computer and the same one was 899. then from a different computer it was 799.

amazing, i thought only companies like expedia/orbitz did stuff like that
