Broken rib - bejesus is this like the worst fracture possible or what?

Skiiing accident - fucked up condyle of the mandible, broken crown and its root, and broken 2nd rib.

I can live with only opening my mouth a few centimeters and eating liquidy things for a few weeks

The broken tooth root is about half way into the crown post, so possible to repair the crown with another one.

But holy bejebus, a broken rib is like the ultimate in pain. Deep breaths? forget it. Lift anything forget it. Sleeping - imposs to forget but shoots you awake when you roll over. Cough - agony. Sneeze - holy mother, it's like getting hit in the chest with a high speed train. And what's worse is it's gonna be like this for over 2 months :Oh crap:Oh crap

Anyone ever had the misfortune to have the same?

Man sorry to hear that, wish you a fast recovery. Never broke a rib, and don't want to find out what its like first person if possible lol.

I bruised a rib on the edge of a couch 2 months ago when i was drunk. Didn't feel anything that night but woke up in pain and it got worse and worse every day. I think it lasted 2 weeks or so. Deep breaths like you said, moving, doing things with my arm etc it all hurt like fuck. It was really bad and it wasn't even broken.

DirtyDanza 02-04-2009 10:52 AM

busted ribs are nothing....

wait till you break your clavacal in a few spots...

it's easier for me to name bones I have not broken ( I stunt motorcycles) and I can say the colorbone is the worst pain ever known to man for me...

ribs are nothing... long as you don't breath too deep and cough your fine...

Dirty F 02-04-2009 10:52 AM

Actually it took 3 weeks for it to heal.

C-Bass 02-04-2009 10:53 AM

i had a bruised rib once - i cant even imagine the pain you're going through. Sorry man.

I've fractured the collar bone before and I swear that bitch of a nurse/sister was enjoying it putting the strapping on - knee in the back forcing my shoulders back while doing a figure of eight thing with a bandage. An I was only 8years old, but the memory of the agony still lives on like it was yesterday :thumbsup

Still, I think this is worse :winkwink: second rib if that makes it any more painful and me less of a wuss:1orglaugh

Snowboarders are my new found principle enemy, cos it's one of em that did this to me
He knocked me out, so I don't remember, but he gave his details to my group. I was hospitalised for 2 days due to the head trauma, but the docs informed me that his details turned out to be bogus.
And the police are getting pissy with me cos I can't give them a description of him :1orglaugh

My family insurance though should take care of all the treatments. But hey, if anyone has some work for me, I'll lap it up [/shameless plug] :winkwink:

uno 02-04-2009 11:09 AM

I've bruised a lot of ribs playing soccer as well as pulled a few muscles around the ribs. It definitely sucks bad and sounds like a similar experience to the symptoms you describe. Be grateful you didnt pop a lung with one of those broken ribs.

How long did they say it should take to heal?

Jman 02-04-2009 11:13 AM

Broke some ribs once while jumping waves with a speedboat, I feel for you... Good luck and sure hope you got good Pain Killaz!!!

Yeah, docs said the same. Plural membrane or whatever that is is fine. Docs said 4-8 weeks. They also said it's not uncommon that it never heals properly, but cos it's the second rib that is one of the smaller ones and isn't subject to large movements from breathing, it should heal.

The mandibular whatsit though - they did say if I've still pain in 2 weeks, it requires invasive complicated surgery to rectify :Oh crap Don't quite understand what that injury is, but it's related to the top of the mandible not being able to descend when the jaw opens wide, which is why it's painful as heck after opening 20mm

i broke a rib in high school playing lacrosse, it definitely takes more than 3 weeks to get over the pain...:( so i feel ya, i've been there. its more of movements of your upper body that make it hurt, not just constant aching pain so maybe thats a plus to look forward to??

as far as the surgery thing, best of luck, hope it heals correctly. mine was a lower rib, they just said i couldn't move for 2 months or do anything contact wise.

Yah man, the mandible joint is a bitch. Your jaw is kind of important. Hopefully they won't have to sew your jaw shut.

I have a doctors appt in a few to see if i'm developing an infection in my crushed fingers that lost fingernails. The bastards better give me a refill on my percocets cause they still hurt a LOT.

Aric 02-04-2009 12:00 PM

I broke a rib in my back almost 3 weeks ago and man is it the most uncomfortable feeling... especially if you sneeze :Oh crap

Ozarkz 02-04-2009 12:27 PM

I broke a few ribs and they apparently didn't heal properly and often when I sit up or put any pressure on my ribs I can hear and feel a cracking and movement.

Yeah I agree, found out the hard way:( A few years ago I hit a deer on my harley , broke 6 ribs and both ankles , not a very pleasant thing, had to sleep sitting up, as getting up from a lying down position was incredibly painful:disgust

John-ACWM 02-04-2009 01:36 PM

Sorry to hear that. You made a hell of a description LOL :thumbsup

Same happened to a friend of mine. Was drunk as fuck, slipped and fell on a table, bruising his ribs. Sad thing is he was moving into a new house so that week I had to do double the work lifting shit.

Poindexterity 02-04-2009 02:04 PM

yup.
it sucks.

but when it's done, you will have
a brand new appreciation for the simple
act of breathing.

Just this evening I was sitting there watching my daughter laughing while chewing on a raw carrot - chest bursting with laughter, jaws bulging with each chew on the carrot and I was thinking it's absolutely amazing the stress we put on the body with each simple act that is only realised when something goes wrong...

spot on observation you made

hohoho, you don't know how much that made me chuckle and groan in pain!

OMG the thought of sneezing sends shivers down my (thankfully intact) spine. I knew I was going to sneeze this morning and tried really hard to discharge the waiting time bomb with the odd 'achum' out lout, trying hard to stifle the urge, then it just burst out - no "ay" but a lot of "chum". Oh man, the pain. Coughing I can deal with as I can control it, but the sneeze is an absolute bastard chess bomb send from hell :helpme

-edit
thankfully I don't hav hay fever.... the Cypruses outside are giving off their pollen by the truck load. Wife is in hay fever hell, but I'm totally unaffected. Oh, for that, I now believe in the existence of a higher being!
