where do YOU find reliable programmers?

I have a bunch of mainstream projects that I want to start but can't find affordable and reliable programmers.

I recently posted on elance and got 8 bids... I won't get into the details, but all the responses made me want to bang my head on the wall.

A few years back, I used another of those sites and paid out some $$$ and the programmer flaked. Luckily the money was escrowed so I got the full refund.

SO.. the question is how does GFY find affordable and reliable programmers.

Kris, Borked, and Konr4d all great coders.

Me personally, I found my guy in the mirror.

mrkris 02-01-2009 11:19 AM

I'm available, just send me a message.

Varius 02-01-2009 11:40 AM

Best way is by referral/word of mouth IMO.

I'm a coder myself, but not taking new stuff on as I have plenty to do already and have been turning a lot of stuff down lately, but I'll definitely give my referral to Konr4d :thumbsup

HowlingWulf 02-01-2009 11:44 AM

Most people aren't willing to pay for top programmers.
Affordable and Reliable don't usually go together. Good luck.

Kiwigirl 02-01-2009 12:15 PM

I have some awesome programmers available for work at this time so if you are still shopping around then let me know so that we can further discuss.
:)

Affordable != Reliable

Here's a good price guide for you:

$75/hour = Friend price only.
$100/hour = Standard price for quality coding.
$125-150/hour = You want it done urgently and the coder must push other stuff aside to make space for you.

Sure, you can pay less for coders who perhaps live in foreign countries (who can still be quality coders), or less if you put them on monthly retainer or pay per project, but generally, if you are paying less than $50/hour then expect to get what you pay for unless you're lucky :2 cents:

Nookster 02-01-2009 12:52 PM

I'm sure you have realized this already, but you will be extremely hard-pressed to find those two features nested within one individual. From my own experience, you will be one of those...not both. You won't find me coding a damn thing unless I'm being paid handsomely for it. The main reason for this train of thought is that we (programmers) constantly are being bombarded by all of these idiots who think their ideas actually mean something. Let me rephrase that; your idea means jack shit if it's not in motion...if you're relying on us (programmers) to set it into motion...that's a major problem on your part and we will definitely not be creating the business plan for you as well. It's just really frustrating when people have expectations for us without even knowing fully what we do. Anyways, that's one of my dilemmas which I've had to cross many times thus far. And of course, you'll come across the lazy programmers. There are those out there as well.
My advice is to just find a programmer that knows wtf they're doing and stick with them. You need it done right? :2 cents:

I have used elance for a year now and never had an issue

granted, you have to sift through the outsourced indian crap generic response form mail shit, but once you learn how to do it you can get some of the best workers from there

I have one guy working for me part time right now that is amazing, found him on elance

fallenmuffin 02-01-2009 01:19 PM

I've got one guy I use for everything. He's kind of an asshole but good at what he does. 'tis me.

Lucky you, i didn't get as much luck as you, he offered his service, we discussed we agreed, etc... first he disappeared for days when he got back, told there was a major outage in Croatia (former Yugoslavia), but confirmed he will start immediatelly, that was 2 weeks ago, still nothing... he can just rest in piece for me.

I don't say he doesn't do a great, but he is neither fast nor reliable.

People in the third-world has a difference sense of responsability, that's probably why they are cheap but if the job isn't done, cheap is a waste.

Oddly enough, the ones we have who are reliable and proficient came from Craigslist.

Given the current economy, I'm sure the selection and quality of available freelancers out there would be better than previous years.
