This tip might save you some money.

If you have a daughter she likely

A) has a cell phone
or
B) uses your home phone line all the time
or
C) has a second line
or
D) is a complete dork

or all of the above

This story will sound familiar. Daughter was always using the phone so i bought her a cell phone, she racked up a huge bill, explained to her how money doesnt grow on trees ( she explained how money is actually made from trees therefor it does grow on trees ) , she racked it up again , i cut it off, she tied up the phone all day , so i got her a second line in the house and a cell phone with a prepaid plan she cant charge anything on.

The upside is my phone is no longer tied up the downside is its costing me almost $100 a month to do so.


So i bought her this thing www.magicjack.com

Its a phone jack you plugin to your usb port of your computer that you just plug a regular phone into , you get your own number in whatever city you want, voicemail , callerid , etc , you can take it to any computer in the world , phonecalls to canada/usa numbers are free 24/7 from anywhere in the world. all it cost is 20 a YEAR for service and like 40 for the usb thingy.

The service is pretty good , better than a cell phone, occasionally it drops calls or sounds a little distant but overall it works , she is satisfied and i manage to save almost $100 a month

Why not just get a phone with unlimited calling?

My daughter is eight, and she has her own cell phone - it can only call to numbers I program into it.

Or you could just tell them that if they want a cell phone they can get a job and pay for it themselves.

My son has a nicer phone than I. :( Fortunately the child support actually does go to him rather than to mom's new wardrobe so he pays for it with that. But like the other kids these days he's not "in" if he's not talking on the hottest phone while playing the PS3 in one hand, the wii in another listening to his IPOD while getting cheats off his laptop.

thats where we were at , but for safety i wanted her to still have the cell phone, it was a prepaid dealy with like 5 numbers you could call anytime for free , anything else you had to pay for before you used it so she had to buy any minutes she wanted to use herself, but then her friends just call the home phone and tie up the line , thus the second line

because this is much cheaper. She has the same kind as yours now for a cell phone, but she is older so it can call other numbers too just she has to pay for that herself. It's hard though because she does ALOT of volunteer work when she could be working for $$. So its difficult to get too upset about the $$

nah, cheapest unlimited plan in her friends zone is like $50 a month and we travel 3 or 4 times a year.

I have my 12 year old daughter on AT&T's pay as you go option, it's free to other AT&T users (myself, her mother, a large majority of her friends) and I have a small text plan for her. It's just under $40 a month.

I WENT OUTSIDE AND FOUND SHIT TO DO. one day i got a job and got a cellphone of my very own.

as previously mentioned, she does a ton of volunteer work when she could be working so i dont mind paying for her phone i just would rather pay less :)

not knocking what you do, All my kids had phones, it was tied to academic achievement and when they got a job, they paid the bills:winkwink:

lol when you actually have a teenage daughter you can come back and explain how well slapping her to get her to do stuff works. Then when you are locked up in jail you can tell us how much better your method works.

That sounds like something that I will end up getting my son when he is older.

well nowadays a cell is a must for safety so there is no achievment needed to get that , she still has to pay for her own minutes.

I have never really tied rewards or punishments to learning with any of my kids because they all do well without my intervention so i hate to mess up a good thing. My daughter gets mostly a's, doesnt do drugs, doesnt have a boyfriend and she does her chores, there isnt much more i could ask of her.

Its not about the money its about not spending top dollar when i dont have to :thumbsup

My daughter is 11 and has had a cellphone since she was 8....Fortunately, she doesn't want to talk on it alot yet....Plus I have over 13,000 rollover minutes so if she wants to talk, she can talk as much as she wants....

I have an extra cell phone I don't use, I am wavering in the idea of letting my daughter have one yet...

my sister got the same treatment, minus the slap pretty much. she nagged and nageed and nagged, guess what, she got a job too. if your little princess has the time to do charity work, she sure as hell has the time to stand behind a cash register for a few hours a day a couple days a week to pay her own cellphone bills.

you do realize that you don't have to bend over backwards on a bead of rusty nails to keep your little princess happy right? all you're doing is teaching her that she can and should expect a man to give her whatever she wants. i hate fathers around the world for this shit...

i watch a friend's kids for her every now and then. she is a no bullshit mom and tells her kids exactly the way it's going to be, and they're great. i give them some apple juice, and plop them on the super nintendo. they love that shit.

i see other people's spazz out kids who flip the fucking lid when mom or dad won't rent them the new 360 game at the store. they screama nd holler and sooner or later they just rent it because it's easier on them. if i had to look after those kids for an afternoon, the only place you'd find them afterwards is on the back of a milk carton...
