Free trials vs. $2.95 trials.

Have any of you tried both? If so, what was the difference in conversions?

maxcom 11-15-2002 03:58 PM

free trials suck. If theyre not willing to spend $2.95, theyre not willing to spend the $29.95 :2 cents:

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:05 PM

that's what I was thinking. I don't sweat spending $3 but I guess some people do.

But I am very confident with my members section and want to show it off. I think it would be a good way to sell people because they would get to see how good it is.

So I was just wondering if there really was any noticeable difference in the amount of people joining.

NetBabe 11-15-2002 04:07 PM

Good point, if they don't want to pay $2.95 for a trial they will be less likely to pay that $29.95 on the rebill. I'd rather get their $2.95 then give something away for free they ain't gonna buy neways.

My 2 cents.

maxcom 11-15-2002 04:07 PM

the only REAL way to offer free trials.. is the scummy way of the 30 minute ones and then fuck em for $50.

RATBOY 11-15-2002 04:08 PM

I read somewhere that people are more likely to spend if the figure has the number 7 in it... I forget where the hell that was...

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:09 PM

I heard the 7 thing also. Internet Marketing secrets or someting.

maxcom 11-15-2002 04:11 PM

lol i heard that it had to be 9's separated by a period. as in 9.95

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:11 PM

I wonder if my processor would let me do that 30 minute thing. Will Jettis do that? How bout a 5 minute thing? lol

DarkJedi 11-15-2002 04:11 PM

$77 for per signup sure sounds right :1orglaugh

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:13 PM

Your 5 minutes are up bitch! Who's got your $30 dollars now? You free loading mother fucker! :1orglaugh

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:14 PM

$27.77

Master_Yoba 11-15-2002 04:32 PM

No difference: in both cases most of them will cancel their subscriptions :1orglaugh

webmite 11-15-2002 04:33 PM

True dat! Most will cancel the trials. But you get better mileage with the $2.95 than the free. Like what's been said, if they don't pay $2.95, they'll not like pay anyway.

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:35 PM

Have you guys tried both? Or is this a theory?

FlyingIguana 11-15-2002 04:36 PM

i've always wondered how would limited trials work? instead of giving them gigs and gigs of content, just give them your new stuff, show them your updates and what they get if they become a full member.

BJ 11-15-2002 04:38 PM

I will pay $35 per free trial

I've helped companies build business models for both. And tried and true they pay for trial more likely pay on rebill.

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:53 PM

Flying Iguana, I was talking to my programmer about that.

Making a small membership area, with only one movie in each category. Then on the exit pop up the FREE LIMITED MEMBERSHIP. Only requiring an email to join. Then you could tease them with what they could be getting if they were in the main area.

Shaggy 11-15-2002 04:58 PM

Plus you would have their opt in email to send them reminder to join every once in a while automatically until they opt out.

Sounds like a good idea. But the net has it's way of slapping you across the face and saying what the fuck were you thinking? So who knows.

ZoiNk 11-15-2002 05:15 PM

Now offering 10 second free trials, you must cancel within 9 seconds not to be rebilled for the full year. Thank you very much,
ZoiNk

Shaggy 11-15-2002 05:58 PM

I don't know, I think 10 seconds is being too generous. Better shorten up a bit. :thumbsup

UncleJimmy 11-15-2002 06:58 PM

Just get those members in the door any way you can...

...then make sure you got in your terms you can opt-in/4free their asses & it's all good :) or at least good enough to pay for the b/w they used while they were wanking to your site for a few minutes...

that's my perl of wisdom for the evening :)

Interesting....
I am against free trials because of all the reasons stated above.

But what if you do a "mini" site, let them know it is a mini site of 2 gigs , but that if they "transform" in a full membership, they would have access to the "full" site of let say 50 gigs???
That the "mini" site is a reflection of the content of the big site....

Hummmmm
:Graucho
I think I will try that when I have time.

tried both ways promoting a sponsor which have no option to disable trials at all.
it all depends on traffic quality - when it's loosy - any trial has a very high chances to be canceled and if u r on a partnership - u r losing cash, if u r on pay-per-signup - u r ok and ur sponsor will most likely make an upsell, especially if the sponsor is collecting email addresses.
when the traffic quality is ok (meaning u'll go for recurring %%) free trials suck big time - they r canceled way more often than the $2.95 ones.

webmite 11-16-2002 04:19 AM

Yeah, I tried both free and $2.95. Free was back in the day when my eprocessor had the option, then they pulled back and I was kicking and screaming with the $2.95. It ended up that $2.95 converted better!
