Playboy Closes NYC Offices

It's the end of an era. Playboy has been the latest magazine to suffer due to the failing economy and they just announced that they will be closing their New York offices.

Yesterday the Post reported that the office will be closing down, but Playboy bosses denied it to their employees until the end of the day.

Late yesterday afternoon, Playboy's interim CEO told staff members: "Most of you read The Post, so you know I have bad news."

During the staff meeting they were told that the office will close down and the print and online operations would be combined and moved to Chicago. Naked hot chicks aren't even safe from the recession.

StuartD 01-24-2009 06:43 AM

Those poor sexy sexy ladies :(

Iron Fist 01-24-2009 06:51 AM

No no... but porn is recession proof.. right? People still blow their cash on discretionary items like porn even when they are cutting back on everything else!

Sheech... maybe now, you'll start to "get it", this industry is affected just like anyone else. Hope your all ready for the next couple years of slow sales :)

notime 01-24-2009 06:56 AM

consolidating & reorganising is the new thing everywhere
to survive the crisis, all companies need to be lean and cost effective

kmanrox 01-24-2009 07:04 AM

i heard on E that all playboy offices, online and offline will be consolidated to chicago if im not mistaken?

Blaming the recession for our problems is the dumbest way of thinking you can have. This industry was in trouble way before the recession... Playboy too.

WiredGuy 01-24-2009 01:28 PM

I'm more than willing to extend a helping hand to those bunnies.

Tough news.

But they've been failing for years, right?

Advertising must be way down though because a few of the magazines I get every month (not porn) are way thinner than they've ever been.

Funny i noticed that a lot of magazines from Europe as well as America have shrunk in size ( number of pages ) and not just porn mags One of the Mac mags i get at :321GFY $16.00 :321GFY now has 40 less pages. time to ditch it ?

Supz 01-24-2009 01:54 PM

Read this article in the post yesterday morning.

Trax 01-24-2009 02:03 PM

porn IS recession proof
paid porn is not

Bojangles 01-24-2009 02:20 PM

Damn. That sucks.

Jim_Gunn 01-24-2009 02:23 PM

They don't need redundant offices anyway. And there aren't many hot slutty chicks who want to do naked photos in New York anyway.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 01-24-2009 02:27 PM

Sounds like they are fighting for survival...although going to the mattresses was always something Playboy was good at... :winkwink:

anything free could be considered recession proof.

LadyMischief 01-24-2009 03:55 PM

It's hardly just recession, this kind of thing has been in the works for a while I'd think.

TeenCat 01-24-2009 04:05 PM

new york will be flooded by rabbits

Playboy, and its model, have been choking for years. You can blame the economy if you like, but it isn't their root problem. It simply provided them with a viable "out".

While not recession proof, we are still a pretty cheap item that people want to have. Playboy is having many of the same troubles a lot of magazines are having. People no longer read them because you can find all of the content on online. OR at least a big batch of it. It is the same reason porn DVD sales are dropping. Why would I spend $20 on a single DVD that I either have to go to a store to buy or wait to be shipped to me when I can join a site and have access to hours and hours of porn?

Online is killing magazines, dvd sales, newspapers and things like that across the board.

sortie 01-24-2009 04:36 PM

Playboy fucked up hard.

Imagine if when the web first came about they had started doing a video shoot
a week and showing it online for free.

It could have been soft core and they still would have controled a lot of traffic to
monetize.

RyuLion 01-24-2009 04:48 PM

People!

There will always be Bunnies! :2 cents:

Playboy will rebound if they play their cards right:thumbsup

Eric, hit me up when you come to Chi-town:Graucho

DaddyHalbucks 01-25-2009 08:02 AM

Makes sense.

Mutt 01-25-2009 08:25 AM

I don't think Playboy the brand will ever die, but it's going to morph into something else eventually - it has to. Softcore glamour is pretty dead. They were caught in a no win situation - a few years back there were rumors that Playboy was going to go non-nude and try to be a Maxim - they bought hardcore cable channels but either their heart wasn't in it or they failed - they remained what they've always been. The mainstream world still considers them as 'porn' and the porn world barely accepts them as 'porn'.

The truth is that Playboy used to be a man's fantasy and nowadays Playboy's biggest fans aren't men - they're young women. But they don't buy the magazine in any numbers and they certainly don't join websites.

Playboy.com really should be a free site aimed at women as much as men.

ContentPimp 01-25-2009 09:07 AM

Poor Heff he'll have to cut down on the multiple gold diggers

Now you have hit at the heart of the matter...

Playboy used to be "a man's fantasy" because it was about a lifestyle everyman wanted and the babes were just came with the lifestyle:thumbsup

Playboy hasn't updated to today's men lifestyle fantasies to be what men want:thumbsup

And hardcore porn won't get it done either:warning:pimp

wyldblyss 01-25-2009 09:43 AM

Playboy like every other company has to adapt or die...I thi8nk they are just adapting, and doing what is necessary to survive.

Damn I was just there in September. Right across the street from Central Park there in NY..

Those nice gold letters on the building. Gone..

Wow.

MaDalton 01-25-2009 11:44 AM

the Playboy brand is still one of the most powerful in the world, comparable to Nike, Coca Cola etc.
if that will be enough to keep up the print and TV biz after the day Hef goes - we will see.

Pornwolf 01-25-2009 12:14 PM

I think they should let Eric run it.

Somebody tell Hef to adopt him and pass the torch. :pimp

Kellie 01-25-2009 01:29 PM

Sad to see :(

LiveDose 01-25-2009 01:36 PM

I used to walk by that building almost everyday. Right across from Bergdorf... Weird way to close it up.

Reak AGV 01-25-2009 01:36 PM

Guess even porn isnt recession proof afterall.

I will volunteer to start a new Playboy office here in NY. There's a family of bunnies, the furry kind, that live in the bushes in front of my house, and I feel this is the prerequisite experience that qualifies me to maintain Playboy's footprint here in the greatest state evar. Also, I have a computer.

Thank you.

OG LennyT 01-25-2009 07:30 PM

Like Marvel moving from print to mainstream media, Playboy needs to start some softcore "fun bunny" movies for mainstream consumption. Nothing raunchy, just sexy fun movies.. get some SNL cast and some Playmates..

True... and I agree with you. The carefree lifestyle of yesteryear is over. Let's just say i'm glad I prepared well in advance of this mess and am ready to hunker down for the long run :)
