The Pink Floyd Thread: "Echoes" (Pompeii, 1971)

Part I:

Quote:

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves

The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and
Something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun...

Cloudless every day you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streamin in on sunlight wings

A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.
Part II:

Excerpts from "Echoes" performed live at the Royal Albert Hall:

"To those who understand...no explanation is necessary; to those who don't understand, no explanation is possible."

Me too..I saw various incarnations of Pink Floyd (and the Roger Waters Band) live, every chance I could, including the "Distant Thunders Tour".

From that tour, Pink Floyd, performing "The Great Gig in the Sky" live:

...and of course, a medley from "Dark Side of the Moon" (produced by Alan Parsons):

RIP Richard Wright...

I'll see you on the Dark Side of the Moon :thumbsup

My favourite Pink Floyd video [Goodbye Blue Sky]:

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 01-23-2009 02:58 AM

I had a difficult time embracing "The Wall", with it's often negative and disturbing tortured themes of alienation and war.

I also thought it was rather bombastic musically.

Eventually, I came around and can appreciate some of the underlying messages.

One of my favorite songs from this double album opus, is the song, "Comfortably Numb", since it scorns the way people allow themselves to become anesthetized by drugs into apathy:

Quote:

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

"Us and Them" Live...

Quote:

Us, and Them
And after all were only ordinary men.

Me, and You.
God only knows its not what we would choose to do.

Forward he cried from the rear
And the front ranks died.
And the General sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.

Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who.

Up and down.
And in the end its only round and round.

Havent you heard its a battle of words
The poster bearer cried.
Listen son, said the man with the gun
Theres room for you inside.

I mean, theyre not gunna kill ya, so if you give em a quick short,
Sharp, shock, they wont do it again. dig it? I mean he get off
Lightly, cos I wouldve given him a thrashing - I only hit him once!
It was only a difference of opinion, but really...i mean good manners
Dont cost nothing do they, eh?

Down and out
It cant be helped but theres a lot of it about.
With, Without.
And who'll deny its what the fightings all about?

Out of the way, its a busy day
I've got things on my mind.
For the want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died.
"Brain Damage / Eclipse" Live...

The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And everyday the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane

You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head, but it's not me

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

I can't think of anything to say except
I think it's marvelous! Hahaha!

All that you touch, and
All that you see, and
All that you taste, and
All you feel, and
All that you love, and
All that you hate, and
All you mistrust, and
All you save, and
All that you give, and
All that you deal, and
All that you buy,
Beg, borrow, or steal, and
All you create, and
All you destroy, and
All that you do, and
All that you say, and
All that you eat, and
Everyone you meet, and
All that you slight, and
Everyone you fight, and
All that is now, and
All that is gone, and
All that's to come, and
Everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon

There is no dark side of the moon, really
Matter of fact it's all dark

One of the most talented and incredible bands ever. It's amazing after all these years, their music still inspires. I remember as a little boy, my brother and i use to sit under my dads desk at his feet while he worked. I remember dad playing floyd all the time and thinking how mystical it sounded. My brother and I absolutely loved it at that age...man we were young....LOL

Floyd will never die... unlike the trash that's rolled out today (some call music) that comes off the corporate production line that has no heart, meaning, or soul.

1971 I had a magnetic tape recorder and I listened to Pink Floyd 24 hours a days continuously ...
