The world's rubbish dump: a garbage tip that stretches from Hawaii to Japan

Quote:

A "plastic soup" of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean is growing at an alarming rate
and now covers an area twice the size of the continental United States, scientists
have said.

The vast expanse of debris ? in effect the world's largest rubbish dump ? is held in
place by swirling underwater currents. This drifting "soup" stretches from about 500
nautical miles off the Californian coast, across the northern Pacific, past Hawaii
and almost as far as Japan.
big problem is that plastic breaks down into nano sized particles that are consumed by animals in the food chain and eventually humans....

how quickly we fucked this planet up in just under 200 years.....

information on the plastic it really has my brain going.

Some interesting info on Bisphenol A (BPA)

Bisphenol A was investigated in the 1930s during the search for estrogen mimics. The first evidence of the estrogenicity of bisphenol A came from experiments in the 1930s in which it was fed to ovariectomized rats. Studies by the CDC found bisphenol A in the urine of 95% of adults sampled in 1988-1994 and in 93% of children and adults tested in 2003-04.

April 18, 2008
The Canadian government released its Draft Screening Assessment for bisphenol A, which proposed classifying the chemical as 'toxic' to human health and the environment.

This is the second time this year I read about people unwillingly consuming estrogen this year.

March 10, 2008
Investigation found drugs in the municipal water of 24 cities, whose water tested positive for a sex hormone. A U.S. Geological Survey analysis of streams in 30 states found pharmaceuticals in more than 80 percent of the waterways tested. Researchers have discovered a range of impacts on aquatic life. Male fish exposed to estrogen have become female; shellfish dosed with Prozac have released non-viable eggs; antidepressants have pissed off lobsters. The impact on humans is not well understood, but a study found that a low-level mixture of 13 common drugs can affect the growth of human embryonic cells.

Recent article coming out of Chicago

April 21, 2008
There are no federal standards requiring the removal of DEET (bug repellent) or other contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, flame retardants and plasticizers, the Sun-Times said.
Source: http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Science...ng_water/6803/

Back to plastic, the chemical found to leech from level 1 plastic is called Phthalate "DEHP". Interesting articles to read when I used search term: DEHP Bottle Water

DEHP migrates into food from plastics during processing and storage. DEHP has been demonstrated to cause developmental toxicity, such as birth defects, in rats and mice from oral exposure.
Source: http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/hlthef/eth-phth.html

Studies suggest that young male animals are more susceptible than older ones to the adverse effects of DEHP on the sex organs.
Source: http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles...tml#bookmark06

DEHP, a probable human carcinogen, possible endocrine-system disrupter, and agent produced in plastics manufacturing that migrates into water from plastic water bottles, is regulated under EPA tap water rules but not under FDA's bottled water rules.

No worries, it is all BS and the earth is just closer to the sun now in its natural orbit than what we were used to in the past. Closer to sun you get the more platics and crap that fall from space. :winkwink:

Besides there is no way we could really effect such a huge planet, that is pure ego crap. :upsidedow

qxm 01-15-2009 05:48 AM

wow.. .that really explains why I have sticky balls.... thats truly fucked up.... I blame China and the Tubes of course... waste has to go through somewhere to get to the ocean and blaming the tubes sounds about right

I saw this on the news the other day. What a sad thing, humans have no respect.

I read a book called "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman. It's about what would happen to all our shit if we just suddenly vanished off the earth. Interesting read, you may enjoy it. If we were gone the earth would take back over nature-wise, but there will be glass bottles and plastic containers here along with assorted nuclear by-products and various other eco-murder effects that will take a very long time to disapate, if they ever will.

By the way, That artical was a good read as well as the info on BPA, thanks for the links guys.

Pretty interesting take on what will happen the world if we blinked out of existence today.

Rather reassuring actually.

We waste time worrying about a fraud like global warming, but we fail to clean up real problems like the plastic in the ocean. They should develop a ship to skim off the plastic and recycle it.

Don't forget, a few countries, including the US and USSR, dumped nuclear waste barrels into the world's ocean back in the 50s. Those things are ticking time bombs too.

Yeah, that was an interesting show. The planet will be fine. We're fucking ourselves more than the planet.

Google Earth show the floating garbage? I'm with you. I want to see photos.

crockett 01-15-2009 09:45 AM

I remember seeing some story a long time ago about some deserted island in the Pacific that was totally covered in trash.

If all this stuff is plastic, you would think someone could make a ton of money going out there and recycling it.
