How can I make a link to a movie file be a download link?

How can I make a link to a movie file be a download link, so that when they click it, it will be as if they right clicked and chose save as... so I don't want the movie to play but be downloaded instead. for both .wmv and .mpg files

Direct link should work... how it's delivered to end user is going to be based on their browser preferences...

Direct link just makes it auto play...

i've seen sites that link to a wmv and it prompts for save as download when clicked instead of playing...

Good question actually. It must be something done server side.

Put this in the htaccess for the directory containing the movie:

AddType application/octet-stream mpg
AddType application/octet-stream wmv

I just happened to read that the other day.

any way to do it other than configuring the folder on the server?
