tax increase on pack of cigarettes comming.

It looks like the tax increase, be it $0.61 or 6% per pack of cigarettes is comming. Pelosi was mentioning that they were going to introduce the State Children's Health Insurance Program increase bill again on NPR this morning.

Quote:

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a U.S. federal government program that gives funds to states in order to provide health insurance to families with children. The program was designed to cover uninsured children in families with incomes that are modest but too high to qualify for Medicaid.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a U.S. federal government program that gives funds to states in order to provide health insurance to families with children. The program was designed to cover uninsured children in families with incomes that are modest but too high to qualify for Medicaid.

SCHIP was created in 1997 and initially authorized for 10 years. SCHIP was to expire in September 2007. So, in July 2007, the U.S. Senate and Congress tried to not only reauthorize SCHIP but also expand SCHIP by $35 billion by proposing a 20,000% increase in the federal excise tax on cigars and $0.61 tax increase on pack of cigarettes. After President Bush's first veto, the U.S. Senate and Congress modified the tax increase on cigars to 6,000% but the revised expansion of SCHIP was vetoed again by President Bush.

A report on federal tobacco progress was also just released that makes everyone look pretty bad: http://health.yahoo.com/news/healthd...eportcard.html

With nearly every state in financial trouble, I would not be surprised if many state legislators start pushing for higher cigarette tax. Cigarettes are probably one of the easiest things to tax and not lose sales on... it's kind of like a luxury tax, maybe we can call it "an addiction tax".

Grow your own tobacco.

Grow your own cannabis.

This is federal, not state, so everyone is going to be increased.

That's either $10.61 for you or something in that range... Enjoy!

Maybe the feds would also like to follow NY state and increase taxes on non "diet" labeled soda's.

In NY, taxes on tobacco and alcohol (and now non-diet sodas) are called SIN taxes. You whacky sinners.. now get yourself to church and repent. But we keep the money.

The other thing you will all see is your states requiring Amazon and others to collect your states sales tax, like they do in NY.

NY state claims that since Amazon has an affiliate program, and has affiliates physically located in the state, that Amazon has a physical presence in the state, and as such, is required to collect the state sales taxes exactly the same as any other brick n mortar in the state! (hello horrifying prescedent!!) Amazon is collecting tax currently for anything shipped to NY, but are suing. Overstock.com also was forced to do the same, until they TERMINATED ALL NY AFFILIATES and are also suing the state.

Stupid point. We are talking about a drug here, not a cut of meat. :2 cents:

tranza 01-14-2009 11:33 AM

Well I really don't care...I don't smoke...

Snake Doctor 01-14-2009 12:23 PM

If national health care is where we're headed, and it probably is, taxing tobacco, alcohol, fat, and sugar ought to be the first way to pay for it.

That's my 2 cents
