is it safe to travel with a laptop?

im going to be leaving for cancun next week, and im hearing a lot of bad stories of laptops getting stolen at the airprts.
it kind of sucks that i have to work at least 1 hr/day,but i have no choice,so ill be needing to bring my laptop.
anyone have any bad experiences going through customs??

Just stay home, it is not safe to travel period. The FAA requirement to remove a laptop from its case for xray is simply a ploy.

You'll have no problems whatsoever. Wait until you see the luggage inspection process in Cancun, you'll laugh. They literally use a traffic signal to indicate who passes and who receives an inspection.

Lol, I went to Cancun last May, it was pretty funny with the traffic light. They make you push a button, green light you get to go, red light they search your stuff at a little table next to the line. About 1:5 get searched.

That traffic signal shit blew my mind.

Laptop theft is an issue more in the good old USA than anyplace else. The normal scam is at busy security checks. One guy goes through the check a few people in front of you, his partner stalls the line between him and you. The guy who went through takes the laptop that you innocently put on the belt.

I think the risk in Mexico is nill compared to that.

I dont think laptop theft is that bad at all not that you have to have a ticket to get through the security line which means the thief has to pay a few hundred bucks to get his shot at it

I always travel w/laptop. Never a problem...just keep it with you at all times.

FlyingIguana 11-14-2002 11:49 AM

take your laptop on the plane with you and always have it with you.

UnseenWorld 11-14-2002 11:56 AM

Yeah, like they're saying, it's no big deal. Your only real vulnerability is at the point where you go through security screening. Just keep your eye on your laptop once it comes out of the X-ray (and the X-ray process seems pretty harmless...my own machine has been X-rayed many times). If anyone other than a security person looks like they're going to set their hands on your laptop, point at them and yell "Keepa you hands offa my puter!"

Sambuka 11-14-2002 02:44 PM

Well if your laptop is a big kickass beasty that weights a fucking ton, that poor smuch who thinks he can run faster than you while carrying your 15 pound BRICK will be sadly mistaken.

I travel with my laptop all the time, I never leave it alone and take it with me on the flights.

If I lost it, quite honestly I would be pretty fucked!

Use a standard carrying case and take it on board as carry on luggage. You probably will be asked to turn on the computer during the security check [this allows the screener to determine its not a bomb].

What if it's a bomb that also happens to be a functional laptop?

good question,...the last week iv been pulling my hair out trying to find out where i can plug in my laptop in Cancun.
My hotel has access, but i doubt they will let me plug in.i think they just let you use there puters, which you pay something like 5 bucks U.s. for half hour.
i found out that theres only 4 hotels in Cancun, with internet access...all on 56k.
i did find this service, that they set you up with a connection in your hotel room for $40 U.s,unlimited access, for 2 weeks on dial up.

just hope its not a scam.
