P2P Promoting

Anyone with any ideas/suggestions for starting up a P2P promotion campaign? I am totally ignorant when it comes to this.

What software is generally used? File renaming, Image tagging?

How do you go about it? Setup a unix based client for almost every network and have it running 24/7?

I'd appreciate any advice.

I have thougt about a solution like that.
But what to share? Your own content (with watermarks) in order to get paysite signups?

Or just mainstream stuff to generate traffic..

But I think the P2P promotion idea is interesting.

Edit: To tired to spell right

i dont think it'll help too much..

Dusen 11-14-2002 10:20 AM

Yes, I was thinking of watermarking content and having that as a sort of "advertisement"

I agree, I think it may be a waste of time, but at the same time it seems to be a low-used method. Mabye there is a reason for that.

I've actually tried to do something like what you're talking about over kazaa... sharing my own content, but having the watermark..... the only problem that i had was that i could just share my files, and there would only be like 20 downloads of a movie off of me per week....

If somebody could figure out how to get a file name out there, so that it will show up in the searches..... let me know....!!!

seems like totally worthless traffic really, i mean don't they just steal everything anyway..

could be wrong, just my :2 cents:

could be worthless traffic..... could be very good traffic....

But even if it converts horrible..... and yes, it WILL convert..... What does it matter... I mean I think it'd be like getting on the hun and not having to pay for all the bandwidth that it eats up.

Just my 2cents:helpme

I have found a utility that is called "Mass Renamer" that creates thousands of copies of the same file, with different names, supposedly which would show up in any search with your given keywords.

Seems like a good idea, $60 though, and I figure I could code something like that myself in a few hours, however 4 hours of my time would only be $60/4 = $15 an hour so I mean it may not even be worth the time.

I would rather have something unix based anyway, I generally would try to avoid something windows based, as I'd like to have it all running off my colo.

But you guys could be right, the amount of traffic I would get from such a thing might not even be worth the time - bandwidth - money.

A quick perl script could do that, and using links rather than actually copying the file would save you a ton of space too. Although, I would
think having movies/pics that actually match what they're looking for would convert better.
I know P2P apps can eat ALOT of bandwidth.

necoeds 11-14-2002 10:50 AM

:winkwink: Yes, P2P apps can eat alot of bandwidth.... BUT once the files start to show up in the searches.... you can kill the file on your end.... let other people serve it :-)

That program is useless for kazaa.
For people to find your files you need to setup keywords through the kazaa 'shared file" controls.

pimplink 11-14-2002 03:07 PM

There's a hijack script you can use with Kazaa its available at the "private" wm boards. Supposedly good for 1K distributions a day depending on your pipe. It's made in Russia so.....be careful :thumbsup

"The highly controversial, and surprisingly long lived, file swapping program Kazaa recently released version 2.0. The new version of the program allows users to search for web pages as well as digital files. In conjunction with this new feature, Kazaa has begun selling keywords to merchants who want to be prominently displayed in the search results. While Kazaa is a program installed on the users computer and not easily tracked by conventional methods, with a reported 100 million plus downloads, the company could prove to be a player in the paid search listings arena. Additionally, Tiscali, an Italian ISP, has signed a cost-per-acquisition deal with Kazaa under which Kazaa will receive a bounty for signing new users to the ISP. "
