That Bryan Adams song, Summer of '69, wasn't about the year 1969.

?Everybody thinks that song is about 1969, but I only used the two digits as sort of a sexual reference,? says Adams in a call from his hotel in Clearwater, Fla. ?Every time I read a review and they say ?Oh, he was only 10,? I?m like, ?I never said nineteen-sixty-nine!??
Adams says a close listen to the song?s closing line will make the intent clear.

I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it till my fingers bled
It was the summer of 69

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit and jody got married
I shoulda known wed never get far
Oh when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Ya - Id always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life

Aint no use in complainin
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenins down at the drive-in
And thats when I met you

Standin on your mamas porch
You told me that youd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Back in the summer of 69

Man we were killin time
We were young and restless
We needed to unwind
I guess nothin can last forever - forever, no

And now the times are changin
Look at everything thats come and gone
Sometimes when I play that old six-string
I think about ya wonder what went wrong

Standin on your mamas porch
You told me it would last forever
Oh the way you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Back in the summer of 69

Brian explained in a very detailed interview on the Howard Stern radio show about a decade ago that the song WAS about the summer of 1969 when he was a teenager playing music with his teen friends. Maybe he changed his story now because he does not want to sound so old. But even a casual listen to the song makes it apparent he is talking about a certain time in his life not a sexual position.

He turned 10 in 1969. Teenagers?

When Bryan sings "me and my baby in a 69" he is in fact referring to an Austin A69, a popular car of the time. I doubt that there would have been much room in a 69 for a 69 as they were very small cars. Hope this clears up the mystery.

i don't think the song would have had the same ring if it had been summer of 75

and 79 would have made him a 20 year old.

Spunky 01-09-2009 09:41 PM

A good Canadian kid like Bryan wouldn't sing about sex like that

SilentKnight 01-09-2009 09:45 PM

It was all wishful thinking.

Bryan's acne kept him from havin' an actual girlfriend. :1orglaugh
