How To Capture 8MM Video To My Computer :::
When I went home for Christmas, my mom asked me if I could convert some of her old home movies to DVD. So we boxed up her old Hitachi 8mm video camera, cables and some tapes and shipped them to LA. Now that they are here, I have no idea how to capture this footage from the camera. The only output from the camera is 2 RCA cables...one is audio and one is video. How to I convert that to firewire to capture into my computer?

bring it to my house. :) My deck has RCA inputs. That'll send it to MiniDV, and then you'll have a digital source.
I mean RedShoe's house. |
You need an analog to digital converter box, or a video deck with a digital output.

Usb
Most of the analog to digital converters you'll find are going to output to USB. If you need to have Firewire, be sure to check the specs carefully. You'll find low end capture devices that aren't much more than a USB dongle with RCA inputs, all the way up through higher end boxes with multiple inputs and outputs.
Pinnacle has some that you can find at BestBuy. Or you can check Newegg for the full range of devices or Geeks(dot)com for low-end stuff. |

2) I offered to do that for free. If you want you can send them to a company (lightning dubbs next to WB) and they'll charg you up the ass to put them onto tape. No one is going to just put them onto your computer for you. You'll have to actually do that yourself. If you want, come and get the deck and do it yourself in the comfort and privacy of your on home. The only thing I ask... is please... PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF FUCKING CHRIST PLEASE!!!! PLLLLEEEEAAAASSEEE!!! bring back my power supply to the deck if I loan it to you. Everytime... EVERY FUCKING TIME I loan it out to the bruthas they bring it back WITHOUT the power supply I've had to buy a new one 3 times. Even my cousin lost the power supply. But it's here if you want it, and you know how to contact me. I mean RedShoe. |

Your computer doesn't have RCA input? Then you'll have to find a usb or firewire convertor.
My sony gigapocket software was pretty good at capturing RCA inputs - TV capturing software. To capture with Adobe Premiere, Microsoft Movie Maker, etc - I had to buy a firewire cable for the RCA input was not found. |
The Apple store will sell you a box pretty cheap that will convert an analog video signal to digital.

If You have a sony mini dv camera it should have a video convert function. This is where it will convert analogue to digital.
Plug the 8mm cam into the dv cam and the dv cam plugs into your pc via firewire and you take it from there. Otherwise you need a pc with a decent video card with analogue inputs, or a usb adapter/converter that lets you plug analogue av into it and then it captures digital thru your usb. Honestly I can't believe you do not know how to do this. This is like old school stuff. |
