NEW YORK - It's been one of the last unsolved mysteries from the gangland career of John Gotti.

Whatever happened to the neighbor who accidentally ran over and killed the mobster's 12-year-old son Frankie ? and then vanished?

The answer may be found in Brooklyn court papers filed this week by federal prosecutors.

They say 51-year-old John Favara was shot to death on orders of the outraged Gambino crime family boss ? and his body was dissolved in a vat of acid.

Prosecutors say a cooperating witness has fingered a 62-year-old former mobster as the perpetrator in the 1980 affair. Charles Carneglia, an alleged mob soldier awaiting trial on five murders, made sure there was no body to be found by dissolving Favara's remains with flesh-eating acid, which he kept by the drum in his basement, a government witness testified.

"In a later discussion concerning his expertise at disposing of bodies for the Gambino family, which included a discussion of a book [Charles Carneglia] was reading on dismemberment, [Carneglia] informed another Gambino family associate that acid was the best method to use to avoid detection," government prosecutors wrote in court papers.

I think had I ran over a mobster's son I would have moved right the fuck out of that house..

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), on July 28, 1980, before Favara and his family were able to move, he was shoved into a van by several men near his work. There were several witnesses to the abduction, and accounts ranged from him being beaten with a baseball bat, shot with a silenced .22 caliber pistol, or both. Accounts differ on what happened to Favara's body. Informants led the FBI to excavate a mafia graveyard in 2004. Another account says that while alive he was dismembered with a chainsaw and stuffed into a barrel filled with concrete and dumped in the ocean or buried on the chop shop lot somewhere. Favara's wife and two sons moved out of Howard Beach, having John declared legally dead in 1983. In November 2004, authorities excavated a parking lot in New York City believed to be a mob graveyard, and the suspected site of Favara's body. While two bodies were found, Favara's was not.

Im sure whatever ended up happening to him wasnt pleasant. Maybe I have watched to many mob movies or read to many mob books but one of the first things I thought was at least they just killed him and didnt pick of his kids first to get back at him.

His first mistake was living anywhere near someone as dangerous as a mob boss. It had to have been common knowledge.
