Pronunciation POLL Part II - MYSQL
The history... SEQUEL came before MYSQL and the only thing they share is common is basic functionality.. Put in a statement and get a result. So when MYSQL came out it was thought that MY Sequel would be the wrong way to pronounce it since it might 1) be grounds for a lawsuit by IBM and 2) confuse people that think it is a derivative of SEQUEL.
This time they got it wrong... It is not MY S Q L since that is 4 syllables and any coder knows that if you can do it with less and be more efficient you do it with less... MY S Q L 1 - 2-3-4 MY SEQUEL 1 -- 2 --3 So when we talk on the phone about LI-nux and MY-SEQUEL you had better pronounce this fucking shit right and not like they taught you in fucking school. You just show off that you are a newb with no experience or real skills when you do that. |
error on the Linnux, but that's the whole other thread :1orglaugh
|
I say My ES Q EL - but any english speaking person I have met say myseekwell.
|
I pronounce it like:
MYSQL 1 - 2 Sounds like "High School" My-SKUEL I make it even shorter, and thus make it better. I rule. |

My-S-Q-L :2 cents:
just as S-Q-L by itself :2 cents: for those that don't say My-S-Q-L, how do you pronounce SQL by itself then? :error |

Jeff Spicoli pronounced it that way in Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982. Give the credit where credit is due! |
Being a bit of a geek I have had this same discussion quite a few times - i always say MY-S-Q-L (My Ess Queue Elle) which is apparently the correct pronunciation :2 cents:

Linux guys say My S-Q-L (properly from Structured Query Language) Windows guys say My Sequel as in 'seek well' |
I see 3 letters, so I say 3 letters. S-Q-L
If it was mysequel, I'd say it mysequel. That's just how my brain works. |
Why not just SQL; who doesn't know that it's mine?

Th true question, however, is this: how do you pronounce PostgreSQL without choking?
|
Just because microsoft markets theirs as "sequel server" doesn't mean SQL is pronounced sequel :2 cents:
|
For me I just say S-Q-L and anytime I hear SEQUEL, I always ask if they mean MYSQL.
