Movie formats???
 

Hey all,

I am the webmaster for a content provider, we have a load
of new footage that i'm currently converting into movie clips
that will be for sale on our site.

I'm having a bloody brain tumor here, trying
to work out the best combination of file types and sizes
that i should be converting the footage to......

So - my question is - what formats and sizes do you webmasters prefer??

WMV? RealMedia? Mpeg? QuickTime?

Also is it worth catering for dialup users (cos you know that
movies optimised for 56 are a fucking joke visually!!!)
or just do it for broadband users????

If you can make .wmv why make mpegs? Same shit, except mpegs are bigger files.

As a user:
I like DivX, the latest versions are quite good, and give you a nice small file size. Need some processing power to play them, but really, any machine bought in the past 4-5 years can handle it rather easily.
Other than that, mpeg is nice, no special crap needed to run it, and runs on all systems quite well.
I'm not too fussy about other formats, for various
reasons, (usually the players needed for them)

I thought that anyone who owns a windows machine could play mpegs and wmv ....

And from what I have seen .wmv is way lighter than .mpg... Also, does anyone ever use real player anymore?

Just put it in the higesht quality mpeg possible.

Let the webmaster encode it.

Unless ofcourse you want to encode it in shitload of formats and sizes.

Surfers have a hard time playing divx, and real player just sucks.

all our 1 minute and 2 minute clips are in mpeg and wmv

i still prefer mpeg and surfers do also but the larger file size is what sucks.

most of our 1 minute mpeg clips are around 4MB. doing that same clip in a wmv we reduce the file size in half but the video starts looking distorted.

The file size isn't to bad...but i can tell you that surfers and members want movies that work...not a movie that they have find a plug-in for.

again, mpeg or wmv...i prefer mpeg though.

sure is when you have thousands and thousands of mpegs like I do in www.redlight.com . we have been making mpegs for that site since 1996.

Don't ignore the 56K'rs that is still a sizeable group.
