kektex 01-05-2009 11:35 AM

fris, I'm looking for a way to keep all my WP blogs version updated without having to go to each blog and having to upload the new files, back up the old ones,etc.

Basically, every time a new version of WP comes out, just update a single installation and all my blogs are updated automatically.

I looked in to using WP Mu, but apparently MU doesn't work that well with multiple domains without some hacking.

That plugin from Mass Automation seems to be what I'm looking for, am I right?

Agent 488 01-05-2009 11:37 AM

Let's say you have old blog posts with links to a sponsor you no longer wish to promote or that has gone out of business. Are there any plugins/software that will let you update the links for all those posts without doing it manually?

Doesn't WP 2.7 have a built in auto-updater? I've seen the update option in the tools, never clicked into it though, so I just assumed (prob wrong tho).

Some awesome plugins listed there. I'm probably gonna check out that video plugin soon. Does it work perfectly as described?

J. Falcon 01-05-2009 07:07 PM

Excellente thread.

digifan 01-05-2009 07:26 PM

yes it does, but only per blog basis.

wpautoinstaller can upgrade all blogs with one click, plus install new ones without grabbing wordpress and ftping.

its a centralized utility to manage all your installs/upgrades from.

donnie 01-05-2009 11:09 PM

I am looking for an auto install plugin/script that would mass create WPMU blogs on sub domains. Anyone knows of anything like that? (Plugin in this thread doesn?t work on MU)

adult-help 01-06-2009 01:01 AM

Hi, Fris. May I publish this tut at www.adult-help.com giving you all the credits?

damn, what a time saver

Sarah_Jayne 01-06-2009 06:31 AM

very nice...I now need a tool to help me go look at all of these without taking up too much time :)

Sarah_Jayne 01-06-2009 06:34 AM

Also..what I think I need is something that will easily backup my blog (posts, settings, etc) and then reinstall it somewhere else. There are times I have near panic attacks at the thought of having to move hosts and not knowing what to do to make transferring the blogs intact as painless and as quick as possible.

adult-help 01-06-2009 07:27 AM

Sarah, try this http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/.

fris 01-06-2009 08:04 AM

Code:

#!/usr/bin/bash

date="`eval date +%Y%m%d`";
mysqluser="mysqluser"
mysqlpass="mysqlpassword"
mysqldb="blogdatabase"
backupsource="/home/user/public_html/"
backupdest="/home/user/backups/"

echo "creating database backup"
mysqldump -q -e -h localhost -u ${mysqluser} -p${mysqlpass} ${mysqldb} | gzip - > ~/${backupdest}${date}_db-backup.sql.gz
echo "done"
echo "creating file system backup"
cd ~/${backupsource}
tar cf - . | gzip - > ~/${backupdest}${date}_files.tar.gz
echo "done"
echo "wordpress backup complete"

handy shell script I use

martinsc 01-06-2009 08:27 AM

great thread, fris :thumbsup

ideaworx 01-08-2009 12:23 AM

thanks for the infos there fris, good stuff

Brujah 01-08-2009 12:28 AM

Have you tried using SVN to easily update multiple blogs?
http://codex.wordpress.org/Installin...ith_Subversion

Does the Export (xml) tool grab everything or does it miss important data? If it grabs everything in an xml format, can this be automated from commandline?
