I think main point is you get a broken player first and pull diode out of it. Still highly pointless though and I know damn well I would find some way to either burn my nut sack or leave it on and cause the cat to combust into flames.

both are pretty pointless.. blu-ray killed hd dvd.. they don't make hd dvds anymore.

You could look up on youtube for many Burning Lasers ... you could pop a ballon , get some papers on fire etc...

Actually it's not a fake at all. It works with all high power laser diodes found in fast DVD burners. They have the power of several hundreds of mW and this is enough to burn holes into many materials and makes you blind very fast if you look directly or indirectly into the beam.
