If You Have A Serious Food Allergy Why Would You Work In A Restaurant?
 

LOL! I asked this question today when I was ordering a bagel at Tim Hortons at the drive thru. I asked for peanut butter and jelly on the bagel and they said they would have to put it on the side because someone who worked there had a serious food alergy to peanuts.

So I laughed and said well this makes alot more sense I will spread the peanut butter and jelly on the bagel as I drive and then get into an accident. She said i'm sorry but that's the way it is... I'm sure 200 other people a day order something with peanuts in it so why would you inconvenience all your customers by having someone employed there who has this alergy? Should that not be a question when you are hired "are you allergic to anything?" and that be a condition of your hiring? Or is that against the labor board's hiring practices?

I don't want to sound like a complete asshole LOL! It's a slight inconvenience and I won't stop going to tim hortons over it. But I pose the question... if you have a serious food allergy why in the world would you put yourself in harms way and work in a restaurant?

peanut butter is healthy in moderation, it has healthy fat in it. not all fat is bad.

Peanuts are one of those allergies that can kill... a lot of people that have peanut allergies can die if they even come in slight contact.

I find it extremely difficult to believe that this person cannot find a seven dollar an hour job somewhere else. They are kind of stupid for allowing such a risk in their lives... actually, I would almost think that the company could be held liable since they are already making accommodations, this person is dangerous.

Regardless, you do sound like one.

Like you said, it's a minor inconvenience. To that guy, on the other hand, it's his job. How he makes a living. Considering he's working at a fast food chain, I think it's probably safe to assume it isn't exactly his dream job.

You're wondering why he took that job? Probably for the same reason anyone else would take a shitty minimum wage job: because he couldn't find anything else.

His allergy is a slight inconvenience to a relatively small number of customers. Should that exclude him from getting the kind of job people only take because it's one of very few options?

completely agree...why can't they work at bed, bath and beyond or at the gap where there are NO peanuts or food that they can be allergic too?
