First Visa, now Internet Tax

First Visa, now Internet Tax

Internet vendors would likely bear substantial costs just in terms of the tax preparation needed to file as many as 45 separate tax returns each year, experts contacted for this story said.

Under the states' plan, online sellers would be required to purchase approved software to compute the appropriate state and local taxes or to certify with the state any in-house calculation systems already in place. E-tailers could choose to outsource tax collection to a certified third-party under the states' plan.

It won't fly. Internet sales are essentially glorified mail order. The Supreme Court has already ruled that states cannot tax mail order sales unless the seller and the buyer are both in the same state. If you live in Minnesota and sell to a Minnesota resident, you need to pay sales tax. If you sell to someone in Wisconsin, you don't.

But, at this point, there isnt a tax on same state purchases over there internet, is there?

and, they have looked at NetFlix and determined that they need to pay state taxes because their DVD's are property, once sent to that state they have a "presence" in that state.
