router can't connect to internet

i got my parents a wireless router for christmas because they have a laptop but no router. anyways, their desktop is windows 98 and i was able to access 192.168.1.1 by changing the ip settings on their computer but i can't access the internet through the router on the desktop. i've tried both dhcp and static ip settings as im not sure which it is (they have satallite internet) but nothing works. is there something im doing wrong?

bump for help :) I had soo many problems getting my network set up last year..

youre gonna want the computer set to DHCP, and the router also set to provide DHCP. Although the router should already be setup for that, the router should be ready to go with default settings.

Their desktop is Windows 98? Sounds like you should have gotten them a desktop instead lol

yeah, i thought it would have too. the only thing i can think of is that its not working due to the computer running win98. i should probably also mention the router is a linksys rangeplus wrt110

Set the router to DHCP and restart the modem. Many modems have a filter table that will only allow X number of mac addresses to connect. Many times that number is 1. Once you restart the modem the router should be able to pull an IP from the router and you'll be in business.

it doesn't look like they really have a modem. they have satalite internet. i am able to connect the laptops wirelessly to the router but the desktop that is wired doesn't work.

give tech support at the satellite company a call, they can probably give you the settings that you are messed up with and have you running quicker :2 cents:
