Money buys happiness? Yes or No?

I've heard many people debate the importance of money...

Most people I have heard discussing this seem to stand by the idea that money truly does buy happiness.

What do you think?

Can anyone give me some kind of argument stating why money does not truly buy happiness?

Is there more to life than money? If so, how is money not involved?

I'm sincerely intereseted in finding reasons why money does not buy happiness or why money is not the most important thing in the world.

This is not a trick.

I'm not trying to prove a point.

I want to learn about the other side of the story..

Any ideas??

Babaganoosh 11-12-2002 10:30 AM

Money can't buy happiness. but it CAN rent it.

Serge_Oprano 11-12-2002 10:31 AM

YES, if you know how to use them and content with what you have

NO, if you are a moron with envying eyes and want more, and more, and more and more...
than one NEVER be happy...

Kat - Fast 11-12-2002 10:39 AM

Hmmm.... Money can't make you happy but it can buy all the toys that make you happy. Happiness is more to do with contentment - when you stop watching TV and magazines/newspapers and seeing all the adverts then you are less aware of new toys - therefore you're aquisitive desires aren't as much in control of your aims in life and you can start concentrating on the important things. Like friends and family, fitness and health.

Its much easyer to be miserable with money, then with out !:2 cents:

Honeyslut 11-12-2002 10:52 AM

If I had my choice I would rather be free of chronic pain than be rich !

jizz mopper 11-12-2002 10:54 AM

yes, except for health, I've never had a problem that couldn't have been solved with money.

Ramster 11-12-2002 10:57 AM

No! Plain and simple? Not really!!!

Let's face it, a VERY high percentage of couples that fight and argue, do so over money! People quit jobs everyday because they pay shit. People are unhappy because of the "Money" they earn. Stress, suicide and daily unhappiness is often caused by a lack of money.

Sure it can, it can buy me what I want and that makes me happy, and I can use it to spoil my brother and nephews. Yup I am inclined to say that it can!

But if a person is grumpy and miserable all the time then it may not work... unless of course they are using the money to buy prozac etc then who knows!...

MPBWhitney 11-12-2002 11:21 AM

Money can buy pleasures but not true happiness. I believe that happiness is not obtainable through matierialism but rather is obtained by being at peace with onesself and by being a compasionate, loving, kind human being.

I am actually reading a book by the Dali Lama "The Art of Happiness". I recomend it... its great!

The Smell of Money

My boy I say you're unaware of
Things that I am unaware of
The things they say behind one's back
That you suspect but aren't quite sure of
Don't say you haven't noticed

The smell of money is all about me
I just can't rid myself
Of it's overpowering bouquet
My inner beauty cursed with obscurity
By a scent that can't be washed away

I don't know who you think I am
But if I'm who I think I am
Then there's no cranny I've examined
Taints the air where ere I am
But don't say you haven't noticed

The smell of money wafts all about me
It neutralizes any other odors I convey
Best friends won't tell me
They know I'm suffering
With a scent that can't be washed away

The stench of money
Is reeking off of me
A mix of cheap cologne
Weasel pheromone and rotted grave
Thank dad and mommy
I'm filthy, stinking rich
So I can say to you "Piss off"
I bathe, I bathe

Last Dollar On Earth

Yeah!
Line up!
Step right this way to see the last dollar on earth
Sign up!
The bus leaves today to see the last dollar on earth
Behold the wonder of the modern age
Displayed resplendent in its gilded cage
There's not another in the world today,
And you just can't take it with you
All night!
There's a special tonight about the last dollar on earth
That's right!
And all the pundits were right about the last dollar on earth
It's always occupied a special space
We keep a guard around it just in case
Many have died to have its fleeting grace,
But you just can't take it with you
Get set!
Only one pint of blood
to see the last dollar on earth
No sweat!
Only one ounce of flesh to touch the last dollar on earth
When we lose exposure in its permanent enclosure
Then you can be sure that we'll take it on tour
So when it comes to call at your local shopping mall
Though the crowds may be large,
you can put it on your MasterCharge

Money

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're O.K.
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team.

Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class travelling set
And I think I need a Lear jet.

Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that
They're giving none away, away, away.

vasten 11-12-2002 11:46 AM

Money can definatly buy happiness, but as you buy it.. it slowly becomes more and more expensive.

Works under the same priciple and the 'orgasm pee'.

If I hold in urine long enuf, eventually releasing should be nearly orgasmic.

Happines is all relative, If I am x happy it will take x+1 be happy.
Ever heard life refered to as a roller coaster, they are right, The happier you get, eventually you will pay for it and come down, and visa-vera (hence those freaky sado people, they are paying in pain, for pleasure when it ceases). But when you die, your 'loans' on happiness, or your happiness 'deposits' of pain are useless. So basically all that matters is 'Just how happy are you gonna be on your death bed, cause those are th only the only 'free happy points' you will ever get.

So make sure on your death bed you have one HELL of a nice big crack rock, wtf, you're about to die anyways.

Money can't buy happiness?

I dont know about "buying happiness" but when I have a slow month and the bills dont get paid the stress level in my home goes up 10 fold.

So when I have money and the bills get paid, food gets put on the table, Cloths bought for the kids. We are lot happier with than with out.

This is all very interesting....

I'm learning alot here...

Most of you believe that money does indeed buy happiness to some level.

Is there anyone out there who believes that money has no part in making one truly happy?

Nemesis:

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you were one of the many people who said that money cannot buy true happiness.....can you elaborate a bit?

Anyone else have comments on this subject?

Birdie 11-12-2002 01:18 PM

Seeing the people around me happy makes me happy, Now if I had money I would make sure everyone around me was happy.

I give to the HIV funds to help find a cure for my sister, I would buy the best doctors for my dads cancer. I would give my mother the home she never has had. I would also give to my other siblings the money they need to be debt free so they could live more comfortable.

And I would definitely give my kids the best damn education that money could buy.

so YES money would make me happy in so many different aspects. One of these days all this may be possible. But I don't see that anytime soon, lol

As always I think of making others happy instead of myself, I guess that means I'm a mom myself.

Amputate Your Head 11-12-2002 03:27 PM

Money cannot 'make' you happy. You can only CHOOSE to be or not to be happy.... with or without money. Saying money can 'make' you happy is like saying a frying pan can 'make' you happy. It's ridiculous.

If you are an unhappy person, you're going to be the same unhappy person if you suddenly have $1 mil deposited into your account. Oh sure... it'll be nice up front and may take away some of the problems that are making you unhappy... temporarily.

In order to be happy, you must first identify why it is that you are unhappy.

Q. Is it because you're over your head in debt? "Yes! That's it.... so you see, money WILL make me happy because then I wouldn't be in debt anymore!"

A. Wrong.... why are you in debt in the first place? You couldn't manage your life with limited amounts of money, what the fuck makes you think you're all the sudden going to be better at managing it with large amounts? You'll pay off your debts and aquire new larger ones, because you are a failure at managing your affairs. Money will not make you happy, it will make you more miserable.

Q. "But if I had money, then I could buy all the things that MAKE me happy."

A. Wrong. As I said.... money cannot 'make' you happy. It is a material thing. You can only choose to be or not to be happy. Sure you could buy alot of toys that you THINK will make you happy, but when you tire of those toys, you will once again be unhappy and will find new toys that you 'must have in order to be happy!' These are the 'if only's'.... "If only I had this boat, then I would be happy." "If only I had a nicer house, then I would be happy." "If only I had these clothes, then I would REALLY be happy."

That's not happiness. It's unfulfilled endless greed. Stop calling it happiness. It's not.

Any more fucking questions?

some_idiot 11-12-2002 03:55 PM

why I was unhappy in the first place.

[Labret] 11-12-2002 04:40 PM

Money cant buy happiness? Riiiight.

I graduated in 98 flat broke and 80K in debt to the US student loan program. You might as well owe the mob 80k with the interest those things stick you with.

I bust my ass for a couple years in gay porn, and by the time I am 28 I am completely debt free. I own my house free and clear. I own all my vehicles free and clear.

I sit on my ass all day and achieved in 3 years what most people spend a lifetime trying to achieve.

While people have to wake up and do the 9 to 5 for some asshole they hate for an even shittier wage, I wake up when I want. There is no better feeling than that. If I felt like grabbing my laptop and flying to Amsterdam for the weekend, I can. I go to the ATM and see 6 figures just sitting in my blow money account. I am actively having sex with a model.

And some of you could possibly think that it does not make me happy?

I have no kids, I have no debt, and everything I make now just gets added to the pile.

Now you tell me how money didnt buy that kind of piece of mind and happiness.

*snip*

Very well put Amp. Happiness is a state of mind and should not be confused with material wealth.

Amputate Your Head 11-12-2002 04:47 PM

[Labret]:

but the money itself isn't what 'makes' you happy. Money doesn't have that property to it. It's flexible, green, has a distinct smell to it.... but as far as I know, it still doesn't hold any mystical properties to alter one's state of mind.

It's a tool that you applied to a long term goal. Achieving that goal and now enjoying the fruits of it is the essence of your happiness. Not the money. The money only got you there.

I know of lots of people who are much happier that make $20k a year than some people making $200k a year. So clearly money does not = happiness. If it did, the person with $20k a year should be significantly less happy than the person with $200k a year. So how is that possible?

Amputate Your Head 11-12-2002 04:54 PM

what if we weren't talking about money....
what if we looked at a clan of cavemen.... that trade for things with bearskins....

how stupid would it seem to see a bunch of cavemen arguing over whether or not bearskins can buy happiness....

"Bearskin good.... me very happy! Bearskin get me nice cave and hot woman with long hair to drag with.... bearskin definately buy happiness... "

So money bought my happiness. :)

I hear what you are saying though. Even though I was flat broke in college, it was some of the best times of my life. And even if the bottom fell out of this industry and I was back to digging in the dirt for 50k a year, I would just be happy for the rest of my life that I got the student loan monkey off my back and Ill never have to pay rent or have a mortgage.

I am the last person that probably should have money. I dont spend it. You are right, the money itself doesnt make me happy, the freedom that money buys me makes me happy.

people are unhappy because they choose to be that way.

In 1986 I grossed roughly $2,300 for the year. I lived on a friends houseboat and pretty much screwed off all the time. Was one of the happiest times of my life.
