Mac users with macbook pro

do you leave your laptop plugged in all the time?

i have had experiences before with laptop batteries that are ruined (PC) by leaving them plugged in all the time.

however, this new 24" led cinema monitor for extending the macbook pro desktop into a two monitor workstation charges the laptop by default. it has an actually power cord that you connect as part of using the monitor with the macbook pro.

hopefully this shit isnt killing the battery like in my pcs.

Get a stand for your MacBookPro, I got one and it helps it ventilate it so you can just keep it plugged in all day.

you should be ok but may want to unplug it once a week and let it fully run on battery until it's almost dead then plug it back in

No problems here, been using it plugged in for 1+ years every day and the battery still holds almost 100% charge.

thats what i am getting from the mac forums too. i just hate being on a plane, trying to watch a dvd and bam, 15 minutes later battery is dead. mac seems to have very good batteries. last night i sat on the couch doing a bunch of shit and i used it for a solid 4-5 hours and it hardly budged the battery.

i do the same with my iphone. i plug it in overnight maybe once a week to get that full solid charge, and the rest of the time i run it all the way down to nothing to keep the battery happy.

ya you can leave it plugged in .. you should get an extention pac so you never run out there are some good ones out there

seeric 12-23-2008 01:39 PM

cool thanks mike. i will buy one at the apple store today. gonna grab a wireless mouse too.

i don't care for that tiny little keyboard though. i like the one on board the machine.

Mine is always plugged in and always on. It doesn't get quite as hot as the Macbook we have here too, so I'm not as worried about it blowing up.

No worries.

The thing about letting the battery run down once in a while is useless - it only applies to NiCd batteries, not NiMH

borked 12-23-2008 02:16 PM

but yeah, invest in a BookEndz (fucking rip off prices!!) for the monitor.

You should get smcFanControl for your macbook. I like being in control of my fan :2 cents:

seeric 12-23-2008 02:27 PM

i don't have a use for that bookendz thing, thats what the 24" led cinema display does.

huh?
Although it sounds like you don't have much need to unplug your MBP from the display, so guess not.

I have to separate mine from the display like 4 times a day, so the Bookendz is a godsend

get a real mouse, not the apple mouse with the "clit" as wheel. dust gets in there and it stops working after a while. and wireless in general is not the best idea, the bluetooth loses connection from time to time and i have to install the mouse again. better get some logitech mouse

I heard it's good to this every two months or so.

candyflip 12-23-2008 05:22 PM

The wireless mouse ain't worth the upgrade. Both versions work well for a little bit and the wheel has gone on every one we have. Each machine has a Logitech G7 that play nicely with OSX.

DirtyDanza 12-23-2008 05:26 PM

get istat pro the widget.. it will tell you battery health... but with a mac your fine...

crockett 12-23-2008 05:47 PM

Can't you just pull the battery out? That's what I always do with my notebooks if I'm going to leave it plugged in all the time.

FrankWhite 12-23-2008 06:24 PM

why use smcFanControl ?
why not download http://islayer.com/apps/istatmenus/
