Anyone know about these new lightbulbs?
You know, the last 5 years, save $100 a year type.
Are you not supposed to put them on dimmer switches or something? |
yeah.. the dont work for shit with dimmers unless its turned all the way up... unless i bought the wrong ones... they also don't seem to work in lamps thatdo various levels of brightness...
one step forward, two steps back. |
They're kind of funky behaving lights.. if you're referring to the energy saver kind that go in swirls like.. I bought a few boxes of them and have them in every socket.. The drop in my electric bill was significant enough to notice it after using only these bulbs instead of regular ones..
When I first turn them on they're not as bright.. they're a bit dim and you can see them brighten gradually.. not so sure about using them on a dimmer switch though.. |
I have a dimmer switch on my fan and have run the flourescent type bulbs in it for the past three years without a problem. Sometimes, they do hum a little.
|
CFL's are awesome, don't have any on a dimmer though. I found the best price for them was at Lowe's. Seems like every other store they were about $10 each. Lowe's had 6 packs for $8, lol.
|
u have to buy special ones for use on a dimmer switch
i switched over to compact fluorescents a year ago also they make the floodlights for outside i don't feel so bad about leaving them on so much a lot less heat and use like 1/5th the power for inside make sure you get the soft white ones, the white ones are too white and flourescenty looking, the soft ones are great, almost like the real deal |
Guess that explains how I went thru 5 of them in less than a week. I did not see anything on the box about not for dimmer switches.
That sucks. |
dont use them with one of those screw in dusk till dawn photocells either, i wasted 2 of the yellow bug light ones.
|
They have to be recycled as well. Don't throw them in the garbage. They contain mercury.

basically there a 4 types
1 - the regular ones theyre cheap cant dim them bout 2 bucks nice for outside light and halls etc 2 - the dimmable ones that can be dimmed in steps theyre ok for every switch and works like 1x switch on then 25/50/75 procent and off no memory bout $10 3 - the stepless dimmable ones nice but also still like $15-20 here 4 - the led ones, theyre the new ones the old ones are phasing out in cca 5 yrs cause of polution problems with recycling them, theyre like $15 too and work on most dimmers, the light isnt what I like though but I guess like the olders ones itll change |
There are some really good led bulbs out there that can be easily dimmed. Unfortunately, they are still in the $50/bulb price. Hopefully that will drop and we can get rid of these horrible CFLs that take forever to reach full brightness and don't dim well.
p.s. open up the base on one of those CFL bulbs. There are quite a few components in there to make it work. |
Considering the average kWh is $0.12, or below.. $100 would be roughly 6 100 watt bulbs running 24/7 for a full year. That's one impressive replacement; it can take the place of seven (the six mentioned above are just that written off).

I have one in my house and it's kicking my budget :) :) :)
|
Ive had some for 1,5 years now, still working perfect!
|
I think they're great, however like others have said they are not as bright. I find myself needing the 100watts whereas I would of used 60watters of the regular kind. However 100watts for the CFL's is really only 26 watts of actual usage so its still a great savings.
