they keep telling me "we are in DEEP Recession, worst since Depression" ...

Deep Recession just like when it was a depression?

What's the difference between.
*Deep Recession
*Depression
*A Large Hole

Are you trying to tell us something Major Tom ?

baddog 12-19-2008 09:58 AM

How come I can't get a seat right away at any restaurants?

DaddyHalbucks 12-19-2008 10:01 AM

It's because our business model of exporting jobs, forcing banks to make loans to people who cannot afford them, and paying people to do nothing finally caught up with us. It is unsustainable.

I went to BJs in Cerritos last night and there was a 45 minute wait for a table. It was packed.

It's just newswhore drama I'm afraid to say.

They are looking at "markets" and "sectors" and such. Not exactly bread and soup line drama, but they tell it like it is.

If the media keeps telling people something then maybe it will come true. They just love playing that stupid little fear game. What happened to Swine Flu? SARS? Bird Flu?

The media needs to focus on news, not editorial and opinion.

Yeah, the drama is getting tiring. What's worse, their incessant chirping about how bad things are is actually affecting buyer behavior from month to month. 2008 has been a crazy year, these last few months in particular.

Ya know thats what pisses me off too.

I saw (and complained about) news reports a week before thanksgiving saying that predictions showed it was going to be DOWN and black friday was going to be so bad.

And yet you BARELY saw reports that black friday sales were UP over last year, and people on average spent $25 MORE than last year on black friday.

BTW slightly off topic but this is exactly why I was so pissed that CNN etc. began their "Should Hillary Quit?" campaign on March 15th. And she won nearly everything else afterwards.. but the "question" never ended.. draw own conclusions.

Lots of friends of mine are not getting Christmas bonuses this year nor raises next year. But they get to keep their job, so that's a plus I guess.

Lots and lots of layoffs, wait till Mid January and I bet we see a shitstorm of layoffs. She look at the auto people, they closed early and longer this year. We are hurting, you may not be cause you make $5 an hour posting on gfy all day.

The bottom is a long way off and nothing will ever be the same.

brandonstills 12-19-2008 07:59 PM

And yet traffic keeps getting worse and worse.

BlackCrayon 12-19-2008 08:30 PM

they just want to keep people paralized with fear glued to the tv. I'm sure they noticed their ratings spike when all of the economic news hit. Gotta keep that ball rolling.

mmcfadden 12-19-2008 08:37 PM

i think the recession to bypass the depression is now in the big 3... chrysler, ford, gm. With a bailout and they fail an entire city will be unemployed (and more)... that I think we would call worse then the great depression.

BTW... u posted songs when i needed help and just wanted to let u know it's still kicking for another year... host/registrars still have me by the balls but it's still makin the money.

tony286 12-19-2008 08:42 PM

I went to my favorite steak house and the manager told me. Lunches are way up but dinners are way down. I think the media scares the shit out of people so they cut back in fear and it starts the cycle.

kane 12-19-2008 09:15 PM

I have had a theory for a while now that I will find out the truth about in the next month or so. I feel that the media hates Bush so much they are purposely hammering away on how bad the economy is just to make him look bad and drive down his approval ratings. I'm not Bush supporter. I think the republicans are heavily to blame for much of the problems we are seeing now. I'm not say this wouldn't have happened with the democrats in power, but it was the republicans in power and when the team does bad it is the coach that takes the blame.

Bush has been very standoffish with the press and he has had a pretty rough relationship with them. They don't like him and I think they like to see him in trouble. Black Friday sales were up, but all they could talk about is that people were only buying cheaper on sale stuff that had a lower profit margins. Other good indicators are starting to come forward, but they mention those briefly then go back to doom and gloom. The media is loving the misery and they are loving dumping it right in Bush's lap.

I think once Bush is gone and Obama takes office the talk will change. My theory is that they will still talk about the bad stuff, but the slant will dramatically change to a very Obama friendly version where they spend most of their time talking about what he is doing to fix the problems that Bush left us with and how things are moving forward.

I guess in about a month we will see if I am correct.

Who forced banks to make loans and how did that put us in a recession?

There aren't really good definitions for each. Everyone has their own way. A recession I believe it two negative growth quarters. A depression is when you have a recession for a long time.

Selling a house right now really sucks. I bought a new house and put my old one on the market last June. The house was totally redone with paint, carpet, solarization, kitchen, etc. Then I cut the price 20% and still no takers.

Sucks....cause banks won't loan money even if you have good credit record.

My banker says the folks that finance the loans are just sitting on their assets for now cause they think the economy is going to get worse....

Then they will just buy up your assets on the cheap and make a killing.

The sharks are circling.....

we're not even close to a depression as far as I see..

any time I'm out I see people working, driving, eating, spending, buying..

We aren't anywhere close to the conditions of the 1930s other than banks closing and people being out of jobs... BUT.. we have more people now than we did then..

6M jobless during the 30s with only 80M citizens isn't the same as 6M jobless today with 300M citizens.. (just numbers as an example.,. those aren't the real statistics.. just saying.. it's something on that idea.)

That's why I am just going to knock mine down and put up something new here. Hopefully start next year.
