what video formats are standard now?

We've been running WMV's and MPG's for a long time in our members areas and have always just stuck to that formula.

But, are those the standard anymore? With h.264 looking so damn good are people wanting mp4's now?

Is quicktime a better player than wmv? Is it standard now? Is Flash the best way to go?

What are you doing?

rock-reed 12-15-2008 03:48 AM

You definitely need to give the member higher quality, better video.

I really like wmvHD and also h.264.

I think stick with quick time and wmv.

Don't worry about flash just yet.

Your thoughts... ?

munki 12-15-2008 03:49 AM

WMV, Mpeg2, and Quicktime we're our old gotos...

We started playing with psp and ipod formats about a year and half ago, and I started moving all of our current clips to dvd+ quality h264 renders around the same time.

I've noticed through our stats on member's areas that majority of clicks are going to wmv and h264 clips now.

You don't have to "worry" about flash... encode to h264, and your clip's flash ready :thumbsup

What about low WMV's? We run out a high and a low and it doesn't seem like anyone is hitting the lows anymore.

I'm digging h.264. Seems like my files sizes are pretty big though. I'm running out minute tests at 30 megs. I think I'm going to start backing it off just until I notice a quality change. Right now the quality is the same as the source.

WMV's are pretty standard for us. We run out a high wmv and a low, but I think I'm going to stop the lows.

Thanks for the flash info. It seems that flash takes a lot longer to run out, and I'm still not happy with the quality. Fuck that for now I guess.

any advice(s) on the h.264 settings?

I was running Low, High, and Ultra High on WMV and all formats, and have stopped lows altogether except for psp and ipod/iphone formats. Just no clicks hitting them, and not worth the extra render times with no attention.

hhmmm but for paysites though? I know it's standard for tube sites. Also, I dunno, I can't seem to get FLV to encode at the same quality as the source like I can with h264.

Do you notice which ones are clicked more?

H.264 delivered over flash streaming is the only solution you need in my book.

Many clients still get WMV, mpg, mp4 for psp and ipod etc but the h.264 is still the best looking video for the size and plays without the need for quicktime.

Ravensp 12-15-2008 08:20 AM

We offer WMVHD and DIVX HD downloads. We also H.264 flash streaming on hotlegsandfeet.com

h.264 takes getting used to when encoding 1500 bit rate is more than enough for upto 720p in hd. Took me a while to get used to using a low bit rate for it. Your file sizes should be smaller than .wmvs

Btw we only do streaming 480p and streaming 720p on our solo model sites. Standard flash, and .wmv downloads on our non exclusive bulk stuff.

Do you encode them yourself or just use the versions that you steal from others? Stop stealing content and using it for your girlfriend site.

james_clickmemedia 12-15-2008 11:23 AM

mikesouth 12-15-2008 11:32 AM

H.264 is the ticket for now, but older computers with low end graphics cards can have problems with it particularly in HD resolutions

when your bitrate is 1500 kbit/s the filesize will always be same, no matter what format (give or take a few bytes). just the quality you get with those 1500 kbit/s will vary depending on codec, 1 or 2 pass, cbr or vbr etc.

i like .h264 and will probably offer that soon too. the quality at the same specs compared to wmv is significantly better

Right, but to get the same quality in .wmv you need much much higher bitrates as compared to h.264 via .mp4's. So when used to having to have 5 to 8000 bitrates in .wmv to see a solid quality hd video, in h.264 1500 is equiv to 8k or so. Sorry if the way I said that was confusing.

ok, right

not sure if 1500 in mp4 is exactly the equivalent of 8000 in wmv, but in general you are right: in mp4 files can be smaller for the same quality as in wmv

tony286 12-15-2008 11:54 AM

I think its better to still have the lo wmv's for the customer that isnt on state of the art and it doesnt take much effort to add them to your rendering.

Anyone still getting hits on small clips? When I was at tripleXCash we were breaking them up into 6 even length clips (regardless of total running time)

Now that I run my own we don't do clips, but now that we're sort of revamping and adding more, kinda curious as to what the standards are now.

grumpy 12-16-2008 04:53 AM

depends on how big the gifs are becoming, otherwise gif is the way to go and easy to protect

i say: offer real streaming, that way people can skip around as much as they want. plus it makes it harder (not impossible though) to save the clip and re-upload it somewhere else
