I'm going to define spam as unsolicited commerical advertising for the purpose of this thread.

I'll go a step further and say it's a form of advertising that you're forced to look at if just for a second before you discard or ignore it.

Back in my day we had these things called newspapers and magazines...they were 90% ads but people still paid for them.

I think you can sum it up into two basic catagories - online - and offline.

I don't know what annoys me more. The calls right in the middle of dinner, with them mispronouncing me name when they ask if I am home - or the daily stream in my Inbox.

You consider blind links spam? I don't use them but I wouldn't call them spam.

receipts are now covered will all sorts of spam.... you go to taco bell and they hand you 5 pieces of paper with your order.... same at the movie theatre...its really getting out of hand

oh the 7-10 min of ads at the beginning of movies now

at least at Regal cinemas now they have 3-4 normal television ads b4 every movie

If you're <i>really</i> that concerned, then you won't mind waiting 15 minutes to see the movie.

i realize in topeka, KS the movies are not packed but theaters by me u have to go 30 min early to get a decent seat on popular nights

one weird anti-spam thing i noticed is dvds dont have previews on them anymore ... dvd tech has the ability to lock out ur menu button so why not put previews??

even vhs tapes r cutting back to 1-2 previews on some instead of the 4-5 i was used to

yeah dvd spam is gay...... when i license dvds and I go to rip them, I have to watch this 2 minute intro for an online dvd place and they have it setup so you cant skip forward

You are aware that the same problem would occur without previews and adverts, right? If it's as busy as you say it is, you're still going to have to arrive 30 minutes before the start of the movie to get a good seat. I wouldn't mind watching some ads and previews to make the time fly by just a little faster.

So, what's the problem?

I don't think they are complaining about the previews and ads before the scheduled start time, it's the previews AFTER the start time that are annoying and not what you paid for when going to the movies.

the problem is i dont want to see a 2 minute coke commercial or a 1 minute pontiac commercial at the MOVIES

previews r fine but the relentless advertising is ridiculous. this is not b4 the movie starts this is lumped in with the previews

they have a 10 minute 'operation enduring freedom' spamvertisement for the armed forces b4 the movie even starts, it usually loops 2x while u sit and wait, sucks.

they have a cool ad for HDTV tho, quality is pretty awesome.

and the muzak retakes of popular songs in the background are totally awesome!

It's a business. They've gotta make money, and really, 15 minutes isn't a lot of time to wait. I just don't mind, that's all.

it all depends upon the spam..some commericals are likeable and funny..then you have those like the talking banners and now the mainstream ones that make me want to mutilate my ears

Assuming your time is worth oh so much to you, i guess you probably just slap on a poncho, and speed your way down to the local theatre, running every stop sign and red light on the way, just so you can make up for that 15 minutes.

Spam is like weed...it's only illegal cause the gov't can't tax it....they get a piece of the bulk mail that you get in your mailbox everyday but can't control email....yet...

This should be outlawed. Imagine how many trees Fax spam has destroyed so far. I am cool w/ electronic spam to a point, but, if we start wasting our resources on this B.S. it's a damn shame.

Actually, what's another few million trees? Those f-ing "junk mail" inserts and shit you get does a ton of damage already.

According to your rather broad definition, banners are also spam, aren't they? Hell, even your text links to Adult Friend Finder could be considered spam under your bizarre definition.

A new breed of pop-up ads is appearing mysteriously on Microsoft Windows users' computers. The so-called "Messenger spams" have security experts and system administrators scratching their heads -- and recipients fuming.

Yup, If I stay connected overnight, I get like 3 or 4 popups by the time I wake up...
