I just said this in another thread
combofix is a great tool, though not for the inexperiencd user (but we are on a webmaster board, right?)

read the description here

combofix fucked up my computer really bad, tehy say about it happens about to 1% of the people that use it, well, I was lucky - it took me hours to get everything working after that

another vote for Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

why and in what way is it not for the inexperiencd user ? are you talking about the complexity of running combofix with all the stages like installing "Windows Recovery Console", the restart of scan ?

Firefox.

Pay attention to what you execute.

Performance degradation? Unnecessary?

Unnecessary I can live with.

Performance degradation I think should not accure unless you use real-time protection like SpyBot's "TeaTimer". - those can be disabled to use only 1.

Personally, I run absolutely no spyware/malware protection. I've gotten 1 infestation in the past 3 years and that was from the one time I loaded up Internet Explorer prior to getting Firefox on a fresh Windows install.

Following the instructions here cleaned it all up.
