Educating Webmasters....

I had an interesting phone call yesterday from a Webmaster who wanted to hire me to shoot a model for him. He asked how many pic sets and how many vids I could shoot in a day and how much it would cost. I told him we typically shoot 6 units per day and it would cost him $blablabla. That could be 3 sets of pics and 3 vids, or 6 pic sets or 6 vids or any combination of 6 units. He laughed a little and said....."just so I'm clear, you shoot all day and shoot only 6 units"? I said yes. He laughed some more and said...."I can shoot that in 2 hours"! Then I said, well perhaps you haven't seen the quality that we produce. He said yes I've seen your work but I don't need that kind of quality. So I replied that perhaps another photographer would be better suited for your needs.

One of the things I've found over the years of shooting content is that I spend a lot of my time educating webmasters about content production. It might surprise you that some of the largest and most successful sites are run by people who have never been to a photo shoot or a video shoot and have absolutely no idea what it entails and how much time, effort and stress it takes to produce content. I think if more "content buyers" would take the time to see how content was produced, they'd have a little more respect for producers. If your a content buyer, you should take to your producers and ask them if you could join them on the set one day. You might be in for an eye opening experience :thumbsup

Good post.

That is pretty much true about any profession. Most people think they could do a better job, faster job but end up getting what they paid for. I hear that kinda shit all the time when managing my construction company. I end up going step by step with the people because what they think is easy usually isn't.

Eric 12-10-2008 12:30 PM

This is a prime example of "You get what you pay for."

Many people do not understand the concept.

OMG Jim 12-10-2008 12:43 PM

Excellent post Dean :thumbsup

One only has to look at your work and stature within the industry to realize that great quality garners top price when it comes to content.

Too many webmasters have "Champagne Tastes with Beer Budgets" :pimp

Please never compromise your standards Dean for the sake of the Almighty $$$.

Well said, and you too Dean.

I always think it's kinda silly that NBA stars get paid millions, but when your electricity goes out or your plumbing gets backed up, you're pretty much "shit out of luck" (:1orglaugh) until those guys show up at your door.

Sly 12-10-2008 12:47 PM

This is true in many facets. When I was selling hosting I always joked that half of my job was educating people. I never really buy into the "that is so much money, they don't deserve that" mentality. A person deserves what they can get, if they have a lot of expenses and a lot of experience and a lot of knowledge... you can only expect the end-user price to be considerable.

I don't think it's silly at all that professional athletes make so much money. Most of them diet and execute extreme workout regimens every day for 30 plus years... that takes discipline and a lot of hard work. Most of us have a hard time getting up at a decent time in the morning. :-)

If they bring in the fans, they get the money.

To be honest, if you can bust out six sets of the quality of stuff you typically post here, that's pretty damn good.

Very true. I think what he may have been thinking is that in todays market there are a lot of NEW Shooters and that they will do the shoot for less. No, they may not be Dean Capture, but they may be the next one that builds a LOYAL following based on the fact that they were GOOD at and cheaper at a time when people are looking to save.

Bosco 12-10-2008 01:05 PM

LOL i love that link !

alexchechs 12-10-2008 01:07 PM

tony286 12-10-2008 01:09 PM

Sorry guys - I should have just ignored that asswipe! My bad! Carry on...........

boudoir 01-12-2009 10:24 PM

Dean, thanks for this info. The first couple of webmasters who encouraged me to shoot content were all about quantity, not quality. Sorry, I can't put my name on crap.

He is a fucking idiot - for sure. And look at the size of his fucking sig! That's two reasons to ban that idiot but guess what? He's probably a bro and nobody will ever say shit to him about it. So much for fucking rules.....

StaceyJo 01-13-2009 04:02 AM

You're exactly correct there, Dean.

And yet, so many here think a website design is only worth $300...well those who think 1:10,000 or worse conversion ratios are "normal" in this "market climate" and "economy" do at least.

Too few stop to think there are designers who actually know how to make a page flow...how to capture a surfer's attention in the nanosecond window of opportunity that a decision to stay & surf or bail is made...how to guide them through the page to the join page and make that join page compelling enough to take action.

Great post, Dean. Your words ring true for ANY professional in this industry.
