Why do hosts ass rape you for collocation?
I was looking at some local collocation solutions in the Orlando area and I just don't get why these guys will ass rape you on a Colo set up then turn around and sell you a dedicated server for a cheaper price.
First they want to charge a min of $50 a U for the rack space, so that can easily end up being $100/ month just for that. Then they want to charge $98 per mbps. I mean WTF is that shit? 10 MBPs would be a fucking grand a month.. so you are talking $1100 to collocate a server , meanwhile you could get a server they supply for around $300/month. It just doesn't make any fucking sense. Can anyone explain why hosts do this, because it's not just one company, it seems to be the norm? It would seem like a collocation would be a great thing for a host because once the server is there they don't have to do shit but collect the money. If it fucks up it's your dollar not theirs.. |
We normally charge $100/u, including power, and bandwidth at $10/mbps or less. Who in their right mind really thinks someone would pay $98/mbps? LOL

These guys do it seems... http://www.marlinesolutions.com/colocation.php Starting at $99 per Mbps ? 1 - 5 Mbps $99 per Mbps ? 6 - 9 Mbps $95 per Mbps ? 10 - 19 Mbps $89 per Mbps ? 31 - 50 Mbps Contact Us ? 51 - 100 Mbps Contact Us ? 101+ Mbps Contact Us |
Keep looking. There are plenty of places out there.
To me, now days with the servers having dropped in price so much that the hosts mostly have all up to date stuff, I dont see a reason for a colo unless you have a guy in the area thats going to go from time to time to maintain it. |

see here http://www.swiftwill.com/dedicated.html prices "as low" as $300/Mbps :) What usually happens, although not your case, with hosts that started a hundred years ago is they still have some old suckers paying them prices from 10 years ago. So if they were to update their prices they'd have to cut everyones' price down which would be a loss for the company. Thats why they don't update their pages/prices. You just need to hit them up to get the real prices. |

Some Hosting plans are still in 1999 :)

we charge 100-150u including power, space and 1Mbps. But this is depending on which datacenter you want to be in. Hey if someone wants their server to be local to them and they don't have to fly to one of the bigger cities or drive into a bigger city an hour or two away local colo pricing might seem fair to them

$99 per U includes power, 1 Mbps, KVM access and remote reboot
BUT we dont have a problem with getting you a Dell quad core with up to 32 GB of ram and large drives. You tell us what you want and think you need, you are the customer. Tell me what you need. Tell me what you want. Also, while to some, those bandwidth rates are nuts, there are for sure areas that bandwidth is not cheap at all. Hard to imagine paying $140 per Mbps, but I had a well known bandwidth provider on a large commit quote that last week on one location. Shocking thing is they get it! Good Luck |

$50 per U for space and power is a bargain... although, probably representative of a B or C grade data center. Those rates on bandwidth are obviously several years out-dated. Quality data center space and power continue to increase in cost, year after year.
Lastly, remember that the adult marketplace is routinely spoiled with low rates by comparison to mainstream hosting providers. Brad |

About a month or two ago, I contacted Rackspace to get a price comparison, given that we do hosting in the same way that they do (we do everything for the customer). I told them I needed the following: DualCore/1G RAM/2x160 SATA RAID 1 with 5 Mbps (we charge $199/month for this). The quote I received from them was almost $500/month with a $249 setup fee, and then they told me that backups would be an extra fee on top of that (which we also include at no charge). -- Bill |
what is the advantage of colocating ?
|
because that's how they make $$$..
|
datacenter space is becoming a rare commodity. I can get you a full rack with 40 amp for a bit less than what you are paying there. Let me know if you are interested.

OC3 sorted me out with my crunching powerhorse and the bandwidth for a very good price. :2 cents: Just explain your needs to the provider.... if they are worth their salt, they will accommodate you |

I thought it was common knowledge that the "posted prices" on the website are not what you're expected to pay...
