Theres gotta be a better way.....
My members area seems to be under constant attack. Iam currently using ProxyPass and am very happy with it , but when a large attack is launched my members area times out. I know there can be much worse, however its very annoying. Is there any methods that any of you guys use in addition to a proxy blocker like proxy pass?

No, telling it to reply 200 OK makes it seem as if every user/pass they try is sucessfull, but it's really not...So they cannot distinguish a good hit against all the bad hits...Therefore they stop and leave you alone =)
