noticing a strange age thing on social networking sites

I was doing some searches on a big Canadian social networking site to see what kind of demographics they are getting, and noticed something strange.

when I did a search on over 30 year old females, alot of hits came up, but unless I am way off in my perception of age these days, well over half of them that had ages down of 38 or 47 or even 55 and 60 all looked like they were 17 or 18............

is that the in thing for teens to do now, is enter an age that they think is so ancient (like 31 to them :1orglaugh) that they think it is so out of possibility that it would be the same as entering 100 years old?

It is kind of fucked up when you are actually trying to find out how many real 30 year olds are on a social networking user list :2 cents:

It might be so all the perverts search for 18 year old girls dont find them. Or if there daddy searches for there page. He wont find her bikini pics on the web.

What about the guys searching for 18-19yr old girls, then come to find out they're 14?

Maybe it is because a lot of social networking sites require you to be at least 15 years old to have an account so those that are under that age just pick a random older age and lie so they can get an account.

This came to mind because my brother found his 12 year old daughter's myspace page and it said she was 22. He was not very happy.

To make a long story short she created the page at a friends house. Then one day he came home from work and she was home and on the computer. She jumped off it quick and was acting funny so he went and looked at the history and saw myspace. He assumed she was just visiting the site, but when he went there he saw her profile. She was using some other name, not her real name and the fake age but she had pics of her up. She looks old for her age. If I didn't know her I would guess her at around 15-16 because she is very tall for her age and she isn't gawky like a lot of girls are that are tall when they are young, but I think anyone looking at the pics would know that she is not 22.

Anyway, when he asked her about it she came clean and told him she created the site at a friends house and that she lied about her age so it wouldn't get flagged.

so these girls that looked 18, and lied and put that they were 30, may have actually been 15 or 16? :error

Yep. She is a good kid, but you know how 12 year olds are. All their friends have a myspace, so she wants one. She wanted the G1 phone for Chirstmas and he decided not to get it for her because he didn't want her having unfiltered full access to the internet anywhere and anytime. Turns out she didn't care about that, she just wanted something with a full keyboard so she can text faster so they ended up getting her something else.

I doubt she was doing something bad on Myspace, but with all kind of freaks out there you can never be too careful.

Could be that the older chicks are picking random images off the net and pretending (badly) that it's them... or the profiles are just fake full stop...

All of my kids have myspace pages.. and they mostly have fun with their friends and each other, but the younger ones know I monitor it like a hawk and I made those two provide me passwords to their accts so that I could keep track of what was going on. I don't USE it often, in fact I think only one time I have used that access, BUT them knowing I have it makes them a lot more cautious knowing I do..... I ALSO keep a close eye on their "friends" pages, if I go to one and they have nudity or anything on their pages, they are removed from them, luckily this hasn't ever happened, but they know I'll do it.

Some people around here say I am a hardass or that I am too "in their faces" but to me, it is my JOB as their parent to monitor them and TEACH them the dangers of being open to the world. This is something that WE never were faced with, so parents need to be "in the know" of the dangers and monitor that shit. If MY "getting in their business" keeps them from getting hurt then I have done my job.

My oldest daughter, she has had myspace since it opened I think, while she is 25 now, when she was younger, she put a much older age on hers, she said, because the perverts were bugging her and once her gang did that, they stopped it right away. They do HUNT down those 19-19 year olds, and younger.
