I thought max security prisoners like the NFL, and an ex NFL player that is a felon would be even more in common with them, why wouldn't he make it? wouldn't he be a hero with those credentials?

If he converts to Islam, he will be pretty much untouchable. No joke. The level of protection and discipline of prison house Muslims almost completely eliminate the threat from other inmates and/or prison gangs. This is part of the reason a sizable % of inmates convert to Islam.
