There are in fact Atheists in Foxholes (serving in iraq right now)

I am so tired of hearing people say there are no atheists in foxholes.

i dont think you have to believe in god to kill ragheads for your country... :2 cents:

notoldschool 12-02-2008 02:00 PM

There are athiests who attend church as well.

Vexes 12-02-2008 02:00 PM

They are misinterpreting the phrase.

Fletch XXX 12-02-2008 02:01 PM

Don't try to spin it.

The saying tries to claim that during a war or in time of danger, there are no Atheists.

There are many Atheists who are serving in iraq and despite the daily threat, they do NOT TURN TO A MAKE BELIEVE LORD for inner strength.

Now will any of you donate?

DAMNMAN 12-02-2008 02:23 PM

I am an athiest (Not agnostic) and have been in many life threatening situations.

My athiesm didn't waiver and I did not expect (or ask for) any help from an immaginary being of any kind. I knew I was on my own and that was fine by me.

I have always been very aggrevated by the audacity of this statement “There are no Atheists in foxholes,” in general and it's usage to belittle my own lack of superstiton.

Fletch XXX 12-02-2008 02:28 PM

I am in full agreement with you.

I have been an Atheist since my early teens, death of loved one made me really start to question the existence of god at young age, and I am 32 now and I am tired of hearing people say the same as you.

Our beliefs are just as strong as theirs, and through all the hard times and pain, I never turned to a failing prayer for inner strength. I attended catholic school from K-8 grade, and I reject it all.

People act as if Atheism or Antitheism is some sort of cult and we have beliefs that would waiver in time of danger or death. I am more of an antitheist than Atheist, but we are all the same.

DAMNMAN 12-02-2008 02:37 PM

I like that Anti-Theist it says a lot. Good one.
I am opposed to the concept of god and think it's very silly, absurd and does more harm than good in the world. (Just look where be fruitful and multiply has gotten us!!!)

My beleifs don't require that I believe things that are illogical or unseen or that require leaps of faith.

Machete_ 12-02-2008 02:38 PM

why would anyone think that someone would not be in the army, because they were Atheists?

I can only speak for myself as a Atheists, and say that if anyone would fight to defend their country, it would be a Atheists, instead of religious fucknuts leaving it up to "the invisible guy in the sky" to fix the problems.

FACT - if it wasn't for idiots(on both sides) that believed in their "God", you wouldn't even be fighting that war now. Because you wouldn't be defending Israel and therefor the Muslims would not be pissed at you.
If the Muslims weren't pissed at you, you would never have been able to stage that fake war

You will be fighting wars as long as you have religious fanatics running your country, and you need to have a war to pay off the FED.

Theres no admission fee brother, no book to read.

DAMNMAN 12-02-2008 02:38 PM

If you are a christian, Jew or Muslim I only belive in one less god than you do. So what's the big deal?

Machete_ 12-02-2008 02:44 PM

If you asked people who had just taken a tour if they believed more in God after returning, I think you would see a pattern.

Generally people have the tendency to wake up and realize there is no God, when you see you combat-buddi get blown both his legs of by a antipersonnel mine, or get half his head taken out by a sniper and you have to sit with whats left in your hands as he slowly die and you can do NOTHING about it... And he ain't going to a place in the sky where they all wear white cloth.

Fletch XXX 12-02-2008 02:47 PM

the reason I started this thread is because I just hugged and gave a kiss to my 20-something year old cousin, about to go away on his third tour for Iraq.

He dont talk about god, ever. After spending time with him over the weekend at a "going back to iraq" family gathering on Sunday, I was reading up on military stuff and wanted to post this...

he spent a lot of time doing roadside bomb cleanup, he was just describing the massive "bus" they ride through mines with etc...

Thanks for the link - tweeting it now.

I cant believe you have to form an organization to not believe in god. Kudos to these guys from sticking it to their superiors.

crockett 12-02-2008 03:49 PM

I always thought the whole "Atheists" term was kinda stupid. Why is it you have to be classified as a "Atheist" just because you don't believe in some god or religion? I don't believe in all the religious hoopla but I don't call myself a Atheist.

Sounds like a bunch of people had the same problem many years ago and there was written a constitution or something like that to protect them from problems like that in the future. I forgot what country it was - maybe it was in Africa

2012 12-02-2008 03:51 PM

who would of thought ...

Atheists and not believing in religion is two different things. Those that just dont belive usually keeps it to themself, because there are not much to debate if you simpley dont belive

You questioned the existence of God because people died?

You do a lot of drugs as a kid or something?

At 11 i watched a cousin of mine get burned really bad, I had to stop the fire, his head was on fire, he died and it was very traumatic. And no about drugs, in fact, the doctors who were looiing into my case wanted to put me on drugs, my mom said she did not want me on them.

At the time i was in catholic school, and i couldnt seem to sit through class anymore for awhile, I was very nervous and had panic attacks.

From that day on, it seemed I no longer "believed"

its not that funny really. I just had a hard time sitting and accepting religious doctrine after that day. yes.

Did you think God lit him on fire or something? Wait, that can't be it. Did you think if there was a God He would put him out? What exactly was the thought process? God would not let bad things happen?

Were you absent the day they told you about free will?

Fletch XXX 12-02-2008 03:59 PM

I am not going to entertain you Baddog.

Free will has nothing to do with it.

OG LennyT 12-02-2008 05:21 PM

I always question a man who has to classify himself in some sort of category when many people, including myself, don't give a shit what you are.

Fletch XXX 12-02-2008 05:26 PM

Its not about placing yourself in a "category." The fact of the matter is, by simply not believing in a Supreme Being, people are PLACED in the category by others. ;)

But hey, thanks for posting buddy

Yep I was in a bad car accident. I never thought I should start to believe in God. Besides he might be the wrong "god" to believe in anyways if there was a supreme being. This is phrase made up by Christians to make themselves feel superior.

of course God let's bad things happen even to his most loving and loyal followers because if God's does exist he's an asshole with a sick sense of humor and I really don't want to have anything to do with such a sick fuck.
