Soccer/football fans: Is THIS a rule or not?

Ok, i found this video and now me and my gnomies are discussing IF a referee can do this.
Apart from how stupid it is.

Watch: Referee gives player red for tackling hooligan?!

Know theres some footie lovers here.

In theory he could for unsportsman like conduct I guess, but I've seen it discussed elsewhere and the conclusion is that he shouldn't have done it.

I ref'd growing up and have tossed players and parents for fighting with each other. Like Michael said, it all falls under conduct and keeping the game moving.

Like others have said, it falls under conduct rules, but I think the ref could have let it slide. Even players from the other team couldn't believe he got sent off!

never mind

Eric Cantona, one of the most exciting players of all time got an 18 months suspension for tackling a total idiot who was abusing his mother.

But yes, you can't do that in public as far as you are a public person.

Lol cantona didnt tackle him he ran and done a flying kick into his chest whilst the guy in the stands totally different.

Agreed, cantonas flying kungfu kick is a bit different from tackling a dude who runs on the field.

It's a rule indeed, the referee made the right choice there...

VicD 12-02-2008 06:18 PM

good tackle, the referee must give RED to the "hooligan"

Jack Sparrow 12-03-2008 02:10 AM

The hoolie isnt a player or actively in the game so its impossible to give him red.. i guess :)
