installing old games onto a new pc... HOW???

I just got "Return of the Incredible Machine" on CD, and want to install it onto my new machine. The manual says it works with windows 95/98/2000. It says you just put the disc in and it will autorun. Well.. since XP and Vista, there is no auto run, it just asks you what to do. Your options are basically to play it with Windows Media Player, or view the contents of the file structure.

I looked thru all the files and there is no .exe file. I looked online and people say it works with XP and Vista, but they don't say HOW they did it. I know all these old time hard core gamers know this shit, and it's probably pretty basic. Anyone here know how to do do it?

How do I create an autorun file that will force the disk to install and play?

if you open the autorun.inf file in a text editor, it should tell you the exeutable file that starts the game/install

You are sure you have "show hidden Files" checked off in your Explore settings?

then you may have to right click and do this

autorun.inf

I don't see one... even when "show hidden files" is checked.

That's what I don't understand. I don't see a way to launch an exe file and I searched the few files it has and there is no .exe file that I can find. Very bizarre.

look for a .com or .bat file
launch, setup, install, run.*

For XP users only:
Go to your unzip dir X:\TIM3 (NOT the sierra install dir!!!!!) and
subdir TIMWIN, so: X:\TIM3\TIMWIN
look for TIMWIN.EXE,rightclick on it-->properties-->>set compability to windows 95,set 256 colors, and <APPLY>

So you done ,go to start-->sierra-->tim.
For the 256COLOR warning see above.

may have to change directions to suit.. as these were for pt 3

nope. Nothing like that here.

There is only one file that doesn't have an extension. I moved the contents of the CD to my HD and I changed that file from no extension to every extension I could think of. .exe, .ini, .inf, .bat, .jpg. . everything and nothing works.

Madness. I wrote to sierra, going to see what they say.

At this point I don't even care to play the game, as much as I do just seeing if it'll work. Ironically, the game is an awesome puzzle game.. and it would seem that getting the game to play is the first level of the game. :)

It runs on both Mac and PC, and I have a Mac and a PC, and it works on neither. :(

The MAc side at least told me WHY it didn't work. The PC side hasn't helped me at all.
