I've tried this before and ended up installing Xp on the machine with 98 on it. It made things so much easier. This is a thread that helped me out http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread....586/qid/341552 but like I said it is much easier to just upgrade the 98 machine to xp if possible.

Thanks. Any idea if 2 versions of XP with the same key might cause problems? |

If nothing else, install 2000. You will have lots of trouble getting 98 and XP to communicate properly.
As for installing XP on the other box, you have to sure you are not using the same key or are using pro. :2 cents: |
I forgot how fucked up win98se is, I just spent 6 hours tonight and about 9 hours yesterday night working on my bros 1 ghz laptop trying to install a cut down version of win98se cause the toshiba laptop software installs SO MUCH FUCKING SHIT! into the taskbar that it runs like a 486 DX66. I can't get over why these Compaq and other companies install so much shit and make it damn near impossible to remove without finding a new version of windows and then finding every seperate laptop driver off the net. pisses me off.
I installed XP on my 2 new computers 2.4 ghz :) and after a perfect no problem install it found everything and as soon as it was first booted up I checked IE6 and the DSL had already been configuired and the internet was working right off the bat. Anyone who disses how much we pay for WIndows can GFY cause XP rocks big time. Oh your networking problems (sorry for my rant) I've had problems networking win2000 in the past the win98 cpu never connected to the win2000 and since win2000 is the same as winxp good luck :) When I was networking the two XP computers together I used the built in networking wizard on the XP CD. That worked between XP to XP it seemed like it might work onto older computers too. Networking problems are such a pain :( Sammy |
You can network between XP and Windows 98. I have an older PC that's running 98 - the license for XP is single machine, so I don't know whether running it on both would cause problems - and I have no real problems networking them, though sharing an Internet connection is more problematic.
