Hitler and Abercrombie and Fitch
The woman I'm dating is a Film major and one of the movies she had to watch for her Upper Division studies is Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will" We watched it last night and it would make an Abercrombie and Fitch commercial. If you edit out the Hitler speeches and focus on the Hitler Youth, you'd think you were watching an Abercrombie and Fitch commercial. Maybe layer in an mp3 of Sum41 or some other crap rock band.
Interesting film....shows graphically how the Nazis incorporated Nietschzean and Wagnerian themes to stoke German nationalism. Really a fascinating look at the skilfull manipulation of symbols and history and the concept of "Volk" I guess, nationalism changed A LITTLE BIT [note the emphasis] from a focus on negative identity--ie., unifying people by reminding them of who they are NOT, to a more positive identity [American 1960's ethnic studies movement] but even the latter can be abused.... just look at the excess of some ethnic studies scholars.
