Help needed on spec for Mac for editing HD video

Looking for some advice on Mac spec for editing HD video.

We are looking at getting a new HD camera, the Panasonic AG-HMC151 and been told that to edit the native files direct in a programme we need final cut on a mac.

We have also been recommended this spect mac

    iMac + Final Cut
24? 3.06 Ghz Intel core duo
    4 Gb Ram
    500Gb hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512MB video card

    Final Cut Express
plus external drive to hold the native files when editing
Western Digital My Book Studio Edition 2TB/7200rpm £235 inc VAT

As we never use macs, not really sure if this is a good spec or not.

Anyone want to comment on whats best for HD editing?

    Cheers

    Paul

Sounds like a good baseline. Of course more power is gonna give you faster render times, which you will need with AVCHD files. Would imagine most of your projects will be under 30 minutes of footage. Should be fine.

You might want to double check on if Final Cut Express can handle AVCHD.

If it's just AVCHD, Vegas and Avid can handle it. You don't HAVE to buy a mac to edit.

If your buying a mac for editing you may want to look at the mac pro's. the Imacs are more or less big laptops and hard to upgrade.
