Yup. Played em for years in college, and a little after.
I wanna say it was Legends MUD.
They went on to create one of the first MORPH if memory serves..

ah the good ol days.. i had a 9600 bps modem in the beginning and then went to buy a 28.8k i still remembered the box wrote blazing fast.. and it was reaaaaaaaaaaaaly that fast :)

so happy to obtain that modem that day... lol

I used to play http://ancient.anguish.org/ back in college.
A couple of guys in one of my media classes set one up for a class project and we played it for about a week - everyone had god settings: 'You said "hi" to [playerx] and killed [playerx] with your voice' or some shit. Nerdy times, indeed.

Back in highschool i got into trouble for trying to program one. I programmed in the Prostitute class. Insta-suspension.
