What internet usage cost in 1993. Almost $1500/month!
Some of us remember this but for those that don't....
I have a '93 AOL annual report. In it they state that in '93 their cost structure was $7.95/month. That included 2 free hours. Then you paid $6.00/hour after that. So if you accessed the internet through AOL for 8 hours/day (if only!) you paid almost $1500/month for internet access. |
Many a time I left my connection on and went to bed... MANY A TIME!
I was on AOL with a 14.4K mutha fuckaaaaaaa. |
I would love to get another 14.4K in fact and force my kids to see how I had to live. When I was a kid the old man used to say how he'd walk all the way across town for a candy bar and a movie for a quarter.
I can't wait to tell my kids we had a 14.4K modem, and then show them what it was like to download a single HEAVILY COMPRESSED image. |

Around the earliy 90s my high school got a quote for internet access... $AUD30,000 (roughly $USD18-21k) per year for a 9600bps connection to the local university. Internet access is still relatively expensive and/or limited in Australia but these days you can get a dedicated 1.5Mbps ADSL pipe (ie no download limits) for around a tenth of that cost. |
I used to run an ISP, everyone thought that the internet connection was totally free and I was basically being a greedy capitalist pig. :1orglaugh At the time I was paying $400/mo rental for a 128kbps link (just the link) and then 19c per meg downloaded (that's right, $190 per GIG). Free, my ass!!! I ended up closing the business with debts of several thousand dollars which were conveniently paid off by my discovery of adult affiliate programs. :D

I remember when I got internet in '95 at a 14,4 modem cost about $3 per hour to be on, my dad usually got a minor heart attack when the monthly bill came. Then in '99 when I figured out how to make money in porn online I paid that bill (which was cheaper in that year, but still) and he was happy :)
edit: now day's I pay $20 a month for 100/100 mbit :) |
I remember when I had dial-up and the bill used to be huge.
|
I remember when they changed their billing to like $20 a month for unlimited access. That must have been 1995 or 1996. You couldn't get on for two months straight.

But try a 9600 modem running a BBS. That was painfull. A member would login and start downloading a 45k nude pic. It would take so freaken long. My modem (netcomm - back in the old days) didn't have auto accept connection when someone was dialing in, so I set it back to have it added. Netcomm laughed at me when I said I was running a BBS on it. Oh the good old days. :1orglaugh |
I still have the box from my 300 baud :1orglaugh
Can't tell ya how many times I ran our family phone bill into the several hundreds.. Never over $1000 though! |
i used to have dialup in '95 till '98 when i switch to an ATM connection @ 256kbps (something like the daddy of adsl)
dialup charges were horrible, 200-400 not inclusive of telephone bills. I also ran my own bbs for a short while.. haha the good ol days. atm was better @ 200/mth for an amount of transfer i cant remember... over that and have to pay $$ per gig then finally i got my adsl @ 512kbps.. then 1mbps then 3mbps then 10mbps which is what i'm using for my home now. i know it still sucks compared to some of u but compared to 10 years back its wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better. and at only $60/mth its a steal :P |
i remember paying over 1k a month in 99 for my first t-1 line
