People that live in Northern countries (North Canada, Sweden etc)

What's it like during the winter?

I imagine it gets dark at around 2 pm or so.

How is it compared to the mild climates?

Thinking of relocating, looking into all options :)

It's cold as fuck in Sweden and right now it gets dark about ~15:30 pm...

Fucking sucks, don't move here. Everything is expensive and the taxes are way too high.

StuartD 11-20-2008 07:36 AM

My igloo starts to melt around mid July but luckily I can get more supplies to rebuild in August.

That's why I'm asking.

I was to Stockholm couple of months ago, it was amazingly warm. And I was amazed that I could have an office in the center of town AND go fishing during lunch :D

So how much are you paying in taxes now?

I am in Denmark and its 4:15pm and its almost dark.
The weather here sucks we maybe have 4-6 weeks a year with great weather the rest of the time it so so. Maybe 2-3 weeks with a little snow the rest of the time its grey and rainy.
I can't imagine living anywhere else for longer periods of time, more than a couple of years, the tax rate sucks (up to 59%) but I think for the most part its worth it, the upsides of free education, free health card and the security of me never have to go hungry to bed no matter what happens makes it worth it.
Crime is fairly low and I besides a couple of ghetto like areas there aren't any places I would be scared to go in the middle of the night.
Everything is mad expensive compared to most other countries but wages are higher here as well minimum wage for example is about $16-18

Phoenix 11-20-2008 08:34 AM

here in canada..it is starting to get cold....yes it will be dark by 4pm or so i guess...or getting dark anyway.

im looking forward to going snowboarding though so winter for me is not too bad....youhave to pick a winter sport or you will be bored.

all in all winter isnt that bad, i think i spend more time with my family and friends in winter. :)

everything also seems like an adventure, you have to get all dressed up, trek over to your friends and into the warmth...i dont mind winter at all:)

pornguy 11-20-2008 08:42 AM

Its winter here and 72 degrees. It does get dark at 5:30 or so, but thats not bad.

But you have hot chicks right ??

The Duck 11-20-2008 08:50 AM

I live in the very south of Sweden (by Copenhagen) and here it goes dark very early. Some winters we have it very cold and lots of snow and others it's just cold and wet.

Do not move here, choose a warmer climate with warmer people.

chupachups 11-20-2008 08:58 AM

I live in the south of Sweden, about 500miles from Stockholm. Winters are milder here which means we never really get any - kind of boring. Right now its about 7celcius, sun goes down at about 4pm, and up at 8am. In general I enjoy winter here - you get a lot more productive and can make up for being lazy during summer (which I try to spend in Spain). If you are thinking of relocating I would def. recommend the south, since you are basicly on the continent, very close to Copenhagen, Germany and so on. In the south I would recommend the small cities Lund/Helsingborg, or even better, Denmark and Copenhagen.

Regarding taxes you would end up with about 45% or so of your profits "in the hand". But who cares - incorporate in Cyprus, Isle of Man or whatever and get a much lower %.

That's the thing, I am sick of this mild climate. I want REAL winters, that's why I'm thinking of going further up north.

If only there was a place with warmer summers and real winters. Sigh.

And I don't really care about taxes. I pay like 12% in taxes - and it doesn't matter where I live. God bless my lawyers :)

Not if you come to scandinavia... the social democrates/socialists have messed up the scandinavia tax systems beyond repair, which is actual sad, since just 40 years ago scandinavia had some of the lowest taxes in the developed world (even lower than what the US had in the same period), and most scandinavians had some of the highest standard of living already back then (ironic how the social democrates/socialists have taken credit for something that was already in place).

Well you would get that here (as far as winter goes - at least in Stockholm), but 50% of the summers are great - the rest just rain away.

Martin 11-20-2008 09:43 AM

Well it starts to get dark around 5pm in the middle of winter here.

Nicky 11-20-2008 09:47 AM
