Gmail is stealing your business!

Seriously, Gmail just robbed a company from a great deal I wanted to give them.

We had this long email discussion regarding me giving some great business to another company.

And just when I am about to send in the confirmation email, I see this ad in gmail.

Click, find a company that would do the same but for greater margins for me and that's it.

That company lost out on a great deal.

Do you think it's fair that gmail scans your emails like that?

seeandsee 11-19-2008 04:55 AM

lol @ "steal over"

that is a good question!

DWB 11-19-2008 05:01 AM

I talk about some crazy shit in my gmail and google ALWAYS has an ad that is on topic with what I'm talking about.

Strange.

Zeroquest 11-19-2008 05:07 AM

"For some reason, every email I send to a gmail account gets bounced back. Do you have another account I could send it to?" - problem solved. ;)

EscortBiz 11-19-2008 05:09 AM

noticed that too lol funny you mention this

Cash 11-19-2008 05:50 AM

I second that.

If what you said is true (I know the targeted ads are) then shouldnt the topic be Gmail saved my business money. I was having this drawn out detailed email exchange with so and so and then a Gmail ad caught my attention and saved my company a lot of money?

I browse it in like 20-40 minute intervals like 1-3 times a day lately. Did not really pay attention to who started thread, just the topic and question. Which did seem to me, should of been worded the opposite as a business owner I figure saving money is better than spending extra if quality is same.

Plus I have totally lost track of who is real, who is fake, who pretends to be in business, and who actually is. The tard level has been damn high lately and I been way to busy to try and keep up with it.

Why in the hell am I typing so much at this hour. I just stopped in while my water kettle was boiling my water for some tea. :Oh crap

Gmail stole my jobs, and my women!:mad::mad:

The Sultan Of Smut 11-19-2008 06:39 AM

Most people would complain if the mail service was opeing your mail and sticking flyers in it but don't even shrug when Google does it, and with your correspondence saved for them to use for however long, it's even worse.

That was the initial reaction. But then I put myself in the other party's place.

I just came to wonder how many times did this happen to me (only the other way around). This might have also happened to you, you just don't really know about it.

Pleasurepays 11-19-2008 07:05 AM

we've had this discussion on our side as well a couple months ago.. sending e-mails back and forth about specific business stuff, products and services and next to the e-mail are adsense ads that target the same keywords. we were actually discussing how many people lose business because of that.... and don't even realize what happened or why.

Holly 11-19-2008 07:25 AM

I have an ad blocker on my browser, so I never see what's going on.

I guess I should turn it off and start paying attention.

TeenCat 11-19-2008 10:40 AM

and whats strange about that? all emails are scanned for danger words ... if you receive email with "bomb" or with "pedo" its for sure that your email goes to dangerous folder for more research. as it happenned with fastmail.ca few months back ... and now, when the emails are scanned, why dont put targeted ads there? its made by some proggie for sure, so i think you dont need to be paranoic that someone is reading your email ... just my :2 cents:

DutchTeenCash 11-19-2008 10:42 AM

true and yes you could be losing biz over that

they always find stuff, still its not geo set, at least I never saw a dutch ad bout cars or so when I talk bout it in my emails

BSleazy 11-19-2008 10:44 AM

I use gmail a hundred times a day and can't remember the last time I noticed an ad.

Adultnet 11-19-2008 10:45 AM

It's clear that gmail lets adsense to scan your/our mails and to show related ads to the content of your mail. that's ok for me, that's story with having to pay every single lunch, before or after ....... BUT, for example, if i'm exchanging, buying or selling hardlinks in order to better rank my site in search engines results??? is that dangerous for my business? is the gmail good choice in that case?

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I seem to recall that they never hid that and that using their email allowed them to track your habits enough to spam you properly.

Man please....too many people use Yahoo's email and IM system....In fact, when customers sign up...If it's a free email, the FIRST choice seems to be yahoo, followed by hotmail...

TheDoc 01-29-2009 12:11 PM

I use Gmail in html mode, it's faster and has no advertisements, big bonus :)

But the ads I have seen are all ESPN, Discovery, Forbes or a Google Service. None of which are subjects of any emails that I get.

I did see one, see that it said "Are you a Genius?" and that was the first time I thought it was reading my email. :)

notime 01-29-2009 12:21 PM

I have no gmail adres.
My email is mine and I like my privacy that way.

My elderly mother had gone on a caribbean cruise... I discovered I could email the ship, and keep in touch...

But using Gmail, I was somewhat concerned with all the ads offering me the chance to purchase 'souvenirs' from the TITANIC!

:)

Si 01-29-2009 01:19 PM

fuck!!!!

jmcb420 01-29-2009 01:23 PM

i'm still at a loss as to why anyone would use any free mail service instead of their own me@mywebsite addy......

SmokeyTheBear 01-29-2009 01:29 PM

when you talk biz on adsense perhaps you should add some keywords to throw off the ads

I had a similar experience with a print-job. I totally went with the cheaper ad, they were even local!

CIVMatt 01-29-2009 01:56 PM

Why the hell would anyone do business on a free email account? If I see someone's email come in from gmail, yahoo, or hotmail I immediately take them less serious

papill0n 01-29-2009 01:56 PM

You mean google is trying to make money out of that free service they provide?

Outrageous!

I keep my admin, domain, accounting accounts.... business stuff.. on my main email accounts.

I use gmail for web forms, social sites, programs, blogs, membership purchases, anything that can and probably will get spam, goes here.

Now I don't have to sort through program bs, social spam, blog comment crap, membership ex-member spam, and all that bullshit. Google deals with it, and I get 99% spam free email without having to lift a finger.

You can also forward [email protected] to google and send back out from that address, so it never says @gmail. It's also a great backup when your host, mail server or the internet is being stupid.

CaptainHowdy 01-29-2009 03:38 PM

Get back to your POP3 account :)!

I use gmail for email, documents, and the other stuff. I've never noticed the ads either. I've completely trained myself to ignore ads. It's very rare that I even notice them even on my own sites.

This is the entire purpose of gmail. It's targeted ads.

perfectodollars-gabrio 01-29-2009 04:43 PM

how about having your own mail instead? then you're in control. i personally use gmail just for emergencies or if i travel and i dont carry my laptop. install on your server a client such as Squirrel Mail and it's done.

tony286 01-29-2009 04:51 PM

Maybe have business deal discussions on the phone so you can lock it instead of email.

Doctor Feelgood 01-29-2009 04:56 PM

whats funny is when i check the spam folder and theres an advertismant for spam recipes

You are dead right.

This has never been a secret. I have always been aware of this and its why I never use it.

Just because other free email providers don't target their ads as well as google, doesn't mean they are not still scannning your emails.

As somebody else said in the thread..... "no such thing as a free lunch"
