Actually, many people became billionaires during the Dot Com Bust One era--what make Mark Cuban different was he cashed out and diversified early right before the big bust. Many of the paper billionaires didn't.

I worked for a venture capital company during that time, our firm turned a $750,000 investment into a $700 million sale (stock) to CNET. The main partners got greedy and hung on to the stock instead of cashing out. It promptly turned to shit.

Cuban's great goal was timing. That's what made him a millionaire before Broadcast.com and that's what made him a billionaire.
