Sukiyaki Western Django - I watched it last night.

I watched Sukiyaki Western Django last night and it was very entertaining. Check it out if you like westerns or are a fan of Asian cinema. It was beautifully shot but the whole movie was very tongue in cheek.

Here's the break down:

Quote:

In a strange land where East meets West, two rival gangs, the Heike Reds and the Genji Whites, are locked in a deadly feud over a fortune in gold. A lone hero (Hideaki Ito) comes to town, meets the gangs' various victims and tries to restore order to the chaos. Director Quentin Tarantino guest stars as a gunslinger in this visually stunning Japanese spaghetti Western from cult film director Takashi Miike.

It makes sense that Quentin T would cameo in that. He's a big fan of Kurozawa. Kurozawa's samurai stuff got turned into Westerns in the US. Similar thematic elements.

I'll definitely check this out... Miiike is sick.

I just watched the original Django the other day.. pretty decent spaghetti western.

I didn't like it, not enough to recommend it. I like both Asian cinema and Tarantino but this was a bit annoying/boring. It wasn't over the top enough to be entertaining in the way it was trying to.. not enough shooting other people's bullets etc and wasn't good enough for the goofyness not to distract. For some reason it's way easier to put up with goofy stuff when it's subtitled.. one of the more off putting things about this was the use of spoken english. When the whore was doing that dance I actually got up and left the room to go do something which is unsual for me because I never violate the sanctity of the movie experience even if it's an average flick.
I was actually really looking forward to it as well.. The fall from expectations may be colouring my view.
