Domain pros, question for you. Who's watching?

So I bought a domain that is singular. Just a few minutes after I bought it it dawned on me that I forgot to pick up the plural name as well so I went back to get it. Within literally just a couple of minutes, someone took it.

My question is, is there someone on the "inside" at the registars who watch these and grab them, or is there is list that guys like you watch and can see in real time what people are buying?

I'm just baffled on this one because it's not a domain that someone would probably go after, let alone at the same time I took the singular version of it.

sounds like someone from the inside...

i have looked up domains at registrars and then went back a few days later and they were gone..

if you want to spend the time, i would contact the registrar and find out whats up..

if they are US based, you could always threaten a little legal action..

Did you do a Whois lookup of the plural version first to see if it was available? Domain tasters have been doing this for awhile. I was reading that it's dropped something like 84% since June.

Yea. What happened was, I looked them both up, both were there and then I got the one a few minutes later after I took a phone call and totally forgot to add the other one to the sale. Then a couple of minutes later I said, "doh!" and ran back to get it and it was too late.

yes, I believe all searches are monitored and here's another wierd one. I searched a domain, found the domain open.... went back later pick it up and it was registered but a year back...

Happened me a couple of times. It was probably an error with the WHOIS.

There is no one watching the domains on an individual basis, however. Tasting scripts still pick domains up in case the visitor chages his/her mind. Wait a few days for the taste to expire and you domain should be free and clear.

Interesting.

How long do they usually hold onto it?

Five days, it's the grace period.

Those fuckers at Network Solutions for example where registering every name searched to "protect you" (making sure you couldn't register anywhere cheaper).
