very odd, looks like it was taken by a plane based on the people looking up when it was shot.. I thought they used sat. for terrain view.

That was my first thought... far to many of them looking up at the camera for it to be a satellite photo.
And way to random to just have this perfect rectangular section in the middle of Africa with no other map info around it.

That is an image that was taken by an airplane. a Drone in fact. The satellite one can grab the head lines of a news paper.

In almost all countries google have local deals for flyover images. I did some of the SAN storrage work for one of the two companies they use in Denmark. Replicated all the data to disks, placed them I a special storrage and flew it to the secret datacenter.

Congratulations on discovering the fact that Google maps uses plane/chopper based aerial photography. They have done so for a while now.

Every time I talk about Google maps I feel the need to mention that the whole idea was "borrowed" (like most Google ideas) from a taxpayer funded NASA project.

if it wasn't for people "borrowing" ideas, technology wouldn't be where it is today

sometimes the people with the original idea didn't have the money or resources to see it through, so it is nice when someone with unlimited funds can come along and make it happen the way it should
